My 2003 AWD Explorer with 43K miles will whine briefly when I make a turn. This only occurs after I drive in a straight line for a mile or two. Then, when I make a turn (into a driveway, etc.), I hear a whine. I can not determine if it is comming form the Engine compartment or the transmission, but I'm leaning towards the transmission. It does not appear to be related to the power steering since I must be moving in order to hear the noise. If I just stop and turn the steering wheel, I hear nothing.
So...any ideas? Once I make a single turn, the noise goes away until I drive straight for another mile or so. I can drive around a parking lot all day and not hear a thing. It is only when I turn into a parking lot that I hear the noise and then it is gone.
