I've noticed since I purchased the mercury it's shifting a bit odd. It seems like it's hesitate to go into thr next gear no matter how fast I'm going and when it does you can hear a slight 'clunk'. I had both the front and rear differentials serviced, and the transfer case as well as trans fluid and filter done all at the same time. The problem was happening before and after so I know wasn't the cause of it. When I got it back they were saying the shifting issues were being caused by the trantransfercase which is apparently a common problem (who knew).

I drive the mercury daily and need to be able to depend on it , is there anything to look for to see if the trans is indeed the problem , or do I just have to either replace it now or just wait until it actually goes?

I've heard that being as I have a cat clogged that might be causing my shifting issues also , is this possible?

Sounds like either the transmission solenoid pack is going bad or the servo bores are worn. Does it do it for every gear, or more so on the 2-3 shift?
