Hello all,
I recently bought an 03 Mountaineer AWD for a good price. The previous owner said the transmission went out. He had it rebuilt a couple years ago. Sure enough, i checked it out and it would not move forward or reverse. Easy enough, it needs a new transmission, just as the owner said. There is no "park" either. I could heard the park pawl/stop clicking when i put it back into park after going through all the gears.

I have been doing some searching about the viscous coupler inside the transfer case due to an issue of binding I noticed in another vehicle. The question I have is, can a viscous coupler failure result in the vehicle not moving forward or reverse? or is the input shaft of the TC directly connected to the output/rear drveshaft?

The power is transmitted through the transfer case.

There is no direct power conection from the trans to the rear axle.

One Explorer I bought a couple years ago had the "transmission out".
After it was towed to my house, I started tinkering with it. I put it in gear, and gave it some gas. I noticed the tachometer would go up, then drop, then go up, then drop, while I held the gas pedal in one position. It would not go in to Park. (Light bulb go off yet?)

Long story short, the transfer case had blew apart internally. Put a junkyard transfer case in, and wallah, drove fine, shifted fine, park worked. WIN!!!

Almost sounds to me like something in the transfer case. Seems like most trans problems on these come on gradually. I would think at least one gear, or reverse would work. Most times the coupling seizes up, but maybe the fluid is gone out of it, or something else in there between the trans and coupler, or coupler to driveshaft.
