2003 mountaineer lost reverse!

O.k. just a few details. I have a 2003 mercury mountanieer. Its a 6 cylinder, 4.0, AWD. I had no previous problems or sounds until one day the vehicle started to shudder (or vibrate) when in reverse. It would still move at this point but after just a couple more times attempting to back up it quit completely. It acts as if it were in nuteral. How could reverse fail and leave overdrive, 3rd, 2nd, and 1st working perfectly?. It even goes in park. Dash gear indicator is lined up as normal too. Oh by the way its an automatic trans

Unfortunately it may have to come out of the vehicle,

unless the range finder on the side is not working, i would try to get one from a wrecking yard vehicle to try , but look for a vehicle that was in a crash , that way you know the vehicle was driving when it was damaged, and it worked properly,,
