mercury mountaineer 1997
Hello All:

I just joined this forum hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction about a transmission problem that just happened.

I have a Mercury Mountaineer 1998 -- all wheel drive.

An hour or so ago, after driving around all day, the truck "lost" reverse.

I had been hauling a trailer with bricks (if that matters...). I had successfully backed up with the trailer, unloaded, drove home, then when I went to back the trailer up into it's spot -- boom -- no reverse.

I thought that maybe my trailer was in a pot hole and that's why it wouldn't back up. Checked that. Nope.

I off-loaded the trailer, and tried again. Nope.

The truck does not appear to be "slipping" gears -- It just won't go into reverse. It's like I am backed up against a block wall.

Any thoughts???

thanks

beth

try putting the shifter all the way past reverse to say 1, than go up to reverse. had a car once that the cable was tretched and that was the only way to engage reverse.

also, are you sure it is a all wheel drive? if your truck has a v6 in it, then you have a different trans then the v8 all wheel drive trucks. the trucks with the v6 motor and trans have a common problem with the reverse ban breaking.

My 2002 mountaineer wont go into reverse or drive. It moves when I manually shift it but that's it. I cant feel it going into the gears at all any ideas?
