Today I picked up two quarts of 75w140 Valvoline which has "Limited Slip" tag on its label. On the back label it says it's ok to use in Limited Slip and also Conventional differentials. I called the 800 number and talked with an Ashland Product Specialist. He says their regular gear oil line that I bought has very little friction modifier in it and it's to comply with GM spec which has to have it in all cases. He says what I bought is absolutely fine to use in the Explorer open differential. If I had an LS version I would have to add more friction modifier or it would not work at all for the clutches. So I did change it out today. Wow that drain plug was torqued extremely tight but I managed to get it out. The new fluid made a huge difference in the whine I was getting at cruising highway speed. Now I want to know how to get that awful gear oil smell off my hand where nitrile glove tore a little.

Wish this was answered. I'm about to change my Open code 45 rear diff oil this weekend due to a very very minor whine and need to know if it's ok to put friction modifier as a preventative measure
