2003 UT vs 2004 UZ - Changes?

I am considering purchasing a Ford Explorer. I've been told that the problems experienced by Explorers were all fixed by Ford some years ago, and that if I am purchasing one, I should get one built in 2003 or later. I have found a suitable low mileage one but it is a 2002 UT model.

(a) Are both the UT and UZ versions safe and reliable, and ;

(b) what are the differences between the UT and the UZ versions.

Those designations aren't used in regards to the U.S. spec. Explorers. Could you please elaborate on what you're referring to?

Sorry - didn't realize that. The UT is a 2002 model and the UZ is late 2003/2004 build. I've viewed the specs on-line and they are fairly comparable. My interest is more to ensure that if I purchased a 2002 model, I will be getting a vehicle that will not be unsafe, and which will give me good trouble free motoring - in other words, has none of the problems that got the Explorer a bad name in the late 1990's (I'm not even sure that those problems were except for the Firestone tire one) . The vehicle I am looking it is low mileage (30,000 miles).

The '02 model year Explorers for U.S. spec. were more problematic than in the later years. Typical of any first year's new model, it seems like it takes the manufacturer a few years to get the bugs worked out. If it were me, I'd probably go for an '04 or newer. The most common problems with the '02s were rear differential noise/failure, rear coil springs breaking (mostly in areas where road salt is used in the winter time...Probably a non-issue in OZ), and dim odometer display.

There are some other common trouble spots, but I don't have the memory to remember them from what I read, and I'm too lazy to search for them.

Your best bet would be with an '04 or newer in my opinion. Most the '04+ owners here are happy with their vehicles, and few have had any major trouble.

I'd probably suggest getting an extended warranty on any vehicle you decide on...It's cheap insurance just in case something major does happen. Hopefully you won't need it, but it's peace of mind if you do. Just like car insurance...You don't buy it hoping to get into a wreck, but if that happens, you know you're covered.
