Hello,
I am braqnd new to this forum. I have a good friend that has a 2004 4.o v6 that has a right side head gasket leaking. He has replaced the gasket and re-assembled the engine and no it will not start. I have done some research on the web about this awful timing chain configuration. Anyway he told me there was no key or dowl pin on the camshaft sprocket. I find this extremely doubtful. So is this true? If so how do you lock in the sprocket to the cam? I feel the RH cam is out of time as there is no compression on the middle cylinder. He has not checked the other 2 as there is no reason. My other question is: Is this an inbterference engine, if so, he probably bent some valves on the RH side. I think he tried to do this job himself and got a bit over his head. He talked to me and I was shocked at the cam sprocket was at the rear on the RH side. Then I went over and saw it in person. What were the Ford engineers thinking? or is this a Mazda design? Totally crazy, 3 chains, tensioners, guides etc.!!!! Anyway, What is the opinion? Can this be timed and running again without removing the engine, or does it sound likje a engine R&R? Sorry for the long post, espicially my first one. Thanks in advance, Kim

It is an interference engine. If it was badly mistimed he could have done damage. The engine is actually from Cologne, Germany. Not sure who is responsible for the design. I like the OHV version of the 4.0 a lot better since it's much less complex.

I can't tell you about how the sprocket is attached, but I'm sure someone else will jump in with the answer.
