I have a 2004 Explorer and I just noticed that when I turn the heat on and set the fan speed to 1 it works, setting two and three are virtualy the same speed, and 4 works well; blowing air out of the vents hard. Basically what I am saying is that setting 1 and 4 work, while 2 and 3 are the same. Has anybody had this problem or know of a solution. My buddy has the same problem in his mustang and we cant figure it out?

Similar problem was in my friends cavalier... I replaced her blower motor, that was bad, but the problem with the speed was the blower motors resistor, cheap part, easy fix... check into it! The resistor controls your speeds, usually when they go bad you only have all or nothing on the speed, but i'd suggest that fix. good luck!

Yeah, it's the resistor... had the exact same problem on my '02 Explorer. The part was in stock at my local dealer... I wanna say around $25. Pretty easy to change, did it in the parking lot actually. There are a couple pretty good write-ups on this board on how to do it. Once you read it, you'll know how to do it... pretty straight forward. I'd definately say it's the resistor though...

Yup, resistors are normally priced around 25-35 bux. I bought my friends at autozone for 25. Good luck!

I am on my 3rd :(

Thanks for all the help Im gunna change it later this week. Its almost the end of the Semester and I have work up the a$$ to finish. Im just glad its nothing major.

Does anybody know where it is i am getting confilicting info and am having a hard time finding it?

Its behind the glove compartment next to the 4x4 control module.

I copied this

The blower motor resistor:

is located on the heater core and evaporator core housing near the blower motor.
has three resistor elements mounted on the resistor board to provide four blower motor speeds.
depending on the blower motor switch position, series resistance is added or bypassed in the blower motor circuit to decrease or increase blower motor speed.
has an overheating device (thermal limiter) that will open the resistor coil when the temperature reaches approximately 184°C (363°F) , interrupting the blower motor operation in all speeds except high.
is serviced as an assembly. The thermal limiter cannot be reset and is not serviceable.

usually its only inches at best away from your blower motor... but i have never changed the explorer so i could be completely wrong

Thanks for the help guys I changed it on Wednesday. But, the fan speeds for settings two and three are still the same? Is there anything else I can change??

Which one is it stuck on 2 or 3?

the switch itself?

try closing all the vents and turning the A/C on 4... let it run about 10 minutes, then try 3, then 2, then 1. and try cleaning and checking any connectors before you buy new ones.

Settings 2 and 3 virtually are the same speed. They blow at the same speed. 1 is low, 2 and 3 are the same speed, and 4 is the hardest setting.

Did you unplug the connectors and clean everything out? It's worth trying before buying more products...

You can test the switch to see if it's bad before replacing it. Here's what the 2002 Ford Manual says about testing the switch:

1. Key off.
2. Remove switch from dash and unplug from connector.
3. Measure continuity between pins (back of connector):
Switch position Low, continuity between pins - none
Switch position Med Low, continuity between pins 3 and 2
Switch position Med High, continuity between pins 4 and 2
Switch position High, continuity between pins 1 and 2
4. Resistance should be less than 5 ohms when expected in step 3 and greated than 10,000 ohms for all others. If not the switch is bad.

Let us know what you find out. Good luck.

Thanks alot ill get the old ohm meter out this weekend and give it a go.

Recently picked up a very low miles/near perfect 2003 Explorer XLT. One flaw, HVAC fan is doing the exact same as the Original Poster.
This XLT has rear climate controls and they appear to be working as they should. The front controls for the rear blow slightly less when over riding the rear control panel. (if that makes any sense at all....Bottom line, both front control clusters have similar issues.
Wondering if anyone has ever got to the bottom on this. I, like most of the posters here assumed it was the resistor card. It was not.
On the plus side I now have a spare and I know how to remove the 4X4 module & the Resistor Card the easiest and quickest way.
Negative side the 4-speed fan still blows very low in 1, the same in speed 2 & 3, 4th about blows the windows out.
Before I track down Climate Control Cluster & tear into the dash, I'd like to make sure I'm on the right track.
