Hello- I have a 2004 explorer 6 cylinder. Last week my daughter left the doors open all day. I had to jump it to get it started. One day later, it wouldn't start. I bought a new battery, still won't start, just makes a single clicking noise from the center of engine compartment. New battery is good. I installed it in my F150 and it started f150 no problem. I put F150 battery in explorer, same thing- just the clicking noise from Explorer.

I put a meter on the starter terminal and had daughter try to start the car. No voltage going to starter.

Up until my daughter left the doors open, we never had a problem. Also, after I jumped it, all the guages would "bottom out" and shake for about 5 seconds when the car was started. After 5 seconds, shaking would stop and guages would return to normal.

HELP.

if no voltage is getting to the starter try jumping it directly, if it does not turn over the starter is bad if it does just the starter solenoid is bad. i own a 98 which i know has two solenoids one mounted to the fender in the engine compartment and one on the starter itself. im not sure about the setup of a 3rd gen however.

Ck theft light? Ford has tsb 04-14-02 for issue of no crank. You must reprogram pcm and then program keys. Basically the car loses the ability to recognize the pats keys.

I am leaning towards the security/key issue. I have read about it on the internet. How do I get more info on tsb 04-14-02 or how do I reprogam? I followed some directions I found on line but had no luck.

Thanks,
John

The key learn and pcm update are only a dealer item for service. Do you have 2 keys already because you will need 2 to do the key learn process.

I do have two keys. I guess I will have it towed to a Ford dealer this week. That sucks....
Thanks,
John

pats

can the pats be bypassed ? im stuck in a parking lot in the midel of no where i have simm prob. could it be ignition switch or trans selector

dam you ford

so if my batt dies i have to reprogram my pcm :thumbdwn::thumbdwn::thumbdwn::thumbdwn::thumbdwn::thumbdwn::thumbdwn::thumbdwn::thumbdwn::thumbdwn::mad:thats realy dummmmmmm ford!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had to have my keys reprogrammed earlier this week. Local locksmith shop had a computer that could do it. Came out to my houe, 15 minutes later the keys worked again. Didn't have to tow it or pay dealer rates. Check with local locksmiths.

Starting nightmare

I'm have a similar experience. I swapped batteries with my Mercury Mountaineer, which started easily with either battery. Not so much the Sport Trac. The Sport Trac starts clicking from numerous locations as soon as I connect the battery. My batteries are old so I don't mind replacing, but I'm concerned about all the clicking. I also have a quirky cruise control. Aside from stupid design engineering, the cruise control decides for itself when it is willing to set. I've read horror stories about fires associated with faulty cruise control and these mysterious clicking actuators.

I'm just wondering if John M ever found a solution and if red82 ever got out of the parking lot.
nononorm, why'd you swap batteries? Did the car just not start all of a sudden?

Correct, I swapped the batteries to see if both of them would start the Mountaineer, which they both did quite easily. I had the batteries checked & replaced because both had cranking amps of only 250 +/- I was able to start the Sport Trac when I installed the new battery. At least I can drive it to a shop and have the errors checked.
