2004 Ford Explorer Limite
Hey. My 2004 Explorer has been acting really strange lately. It stalls when coming to a stop especially when driven on the highways or when the truck has warmed up. In the mornings, it drives like I'd like it to.

I first looked for the IAC to service but couldn't find it. It looks to be part of the electronic throttle body. I removed the EGR and cleaned it. I did the same thing to the MAF. It seemed to be better for a few days but the stalling returned.

I replaced the EGR and throttle body and it seemed better but after a few days of relief the stalling returned.

I also searched for vacuum leaks before I made the decision to change the throttle body and EGR. Now I'm wondering if it may be a transmission problem I'm experiencing. The Explorer does seems to vibrate when its about to stall which could be the torque converter locking up.

Today I took the Explorer to my buddy who runs a transmission shop not too far from me and he drove it around with the scanner and he thinks it may be the tranny but there are no codes and he wouldn't like to rebuild the tranny and find out it wasn't the problem from the beginning.

So he recommends I chance the fluid and inspect it for contaminants. So that's my plan for tomorrow. I will check in tomorrow with my findings. If anyone can comment or recommend something I would appreciate it.

Look at posts 17 and 19 in this thread: 2003 Ford Explorer Idle/Stall Problem

If you find that it is the inertia switch that is bad I HIGHLY recommend replacing it and not just jumping it as the poster said he did as a permanent fix.

Welcome to the forum:chug:

I checked the electrical plug of the inertia switch and it looks like brand new. In other words, there are no signs of burning or melting.

I changed the transmission fluid and filter yesterday and I didn't noticed any chunks on the magnet. Just the typical clutch filings. I used Ford spec atf with a half bottle of Lucas tranny fix and didn't notice a change in my original problem. I had some tranny guys look at it today and they seem to think it maybe engine management related. So maybe it's not my transmission that's the problem.

I'm doing a full computer reset but touching the positive and negative wires together for 10 mins then letting the engine run for as long as it needs to to properly reset the new electeonic throttle body which I installed last week. What I find strange is I'm not getting any trouble codes from the computer. So its very difficult to know where to start my diagnosis.

Please keep the advice coming. Thanks.

Ok so I did the hard reset but bringing together the power cable and negative cable for ten minutes. Then I let the truck run for 30mins just at idle in park. I think this did the trick. The drive home was nerve wrecking coming to each stop but to my surprise it drove like it would fresh off the show room floor.

Tomorrow I have to drive around town so I'll see how thongs go and i will check back when I can.
