2004 Ford Explorer - How to replace rear brakes.

Hello, new to the forum so sorry if I got this in the wrong place.

I have a 2004 Ford Explorer and have replaced the front brakes, but am having difficulty with the back brakes. I've replaced front and rear brakes on many other cars, but the back brakes on this vehicle seem to be different. Does anyone have images or step by step instructions that might be helpful?

Um- confused. You say Taurus in the title, and Explorer in the thread... What problem are you having? I know a lot of Ford vehicles as newer models are using pistons that must be screwed back in, not pushed. Everything else should be fairly straight forward.

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread to the stock 02-05 section, and renamed the title to say Explorer instead of Taurus since your profile, and post say Explorer.

I cant remember specifics... but I did all 4 wheels about 3-4 months ago.
I was all done in less than an hr.
If memory serves me right, there's just 2 bolts like the front, and the caliper comes off, push the piston back in, new pads, bolt it back on.

At what point are you stuck? Have you gotten the calipers off?

Check with Curtis- I remember having to screw my rear piston back in with a special tool on my '99 Taurus, wasn't sure if they were the same on the '04 Ex.

I have the special tool to push the piston back in but a large C-clamp works well too.

yea its definately nice to have brake tools.

My brother-in-law used to be a brake tech, so he gave me tons of brake equipment for FREE after he quit working there.

I still hate working on brakes......id rather replace intake manifold gaskets anyday.

my 02 mountaineer the pistons just push back in like normal.(c-clamp or brake tool). but i know my exgirls VW jetta the rear ones had to have a special tool that twisted the piston and pushed it in at the sametime. didnt know that and ended up messin her brakes up BIG time. thankfully my mechanic was able to rebuild it in stead of having to replace them. IF THEY DONT SLIDE IN EASY THEN THEY PROBABLY HAVE TO TWIST IN. should not have to use much pressure at all. DIDNT KNOW FORD WAS DOING THIS TOO. WHICH CARS DID THEY DO THIS ON?

Are you having problems with the parking brakes in the rear? I know the disc is easy to replace but the parking brake is another story. I am also doing my rear brakes on my '04' Explorer Limited and have got stuck on the parking brake spot. I have got one of the clips and springs on and having trouble with the other spring and clip. I am searching for any info on this problem.
