My wife's Explorer has died twice when she switches from reverse to drive in the morning on the way to work. Both times the vehicle wasn't warmed up or anything and she just hopped in, put it into reverse to back out of the driveway, shifted to drive and then it died. The first time this happened we had to crank it a few times over the course of 15 minutes to get it to start up again. The most recent incident it started up again right away.
I'm not terribly car savvy but i've done some repair work on our previous older Explorer. My gut tells me this might be the fuel pump going bad since the fuel gauge will refuse to read for a mile or two after you let the gas tank get empty and then fill it all the way up, then the gauge works great. Any ideas?
