We have in addition to our Explorer a 2004 Ford Freestar w/54K miles, the transaxle warning light begins to flash while driving at highway speeds only. Normal city driving the light does not come on. I stop and restart the engine and the light is off. It will come on again in a few miles; there is no noticeable shifting or driving/operational problems.
The van is in great shape & items such as this should not be failing this soon. Regular maintenance is performed. Any ideas? Could it be a bad sensor somewhere? I had heard that the A/C is linked to the transmission with electronics, & low and behold our A/C doesn't work either. I just want to save a mega-buck diagnostic that fails to address/correct the problem.
thanks

The flashing light represents a stored code or codes. You will need to find out what the code numbers are. It's not a good idea to keep driving it this way.

thanks, I'm going to take it this evening to see what codes come up.

freestar tranny is shot

Well it ended up being the torque converter output shaft. When the fluid would he up due to the shaft the light would come on. Let it cool down no problems no light, but 10 min on the road 7 it's flashing. so.....
A typical problem for this model and year. It ticks me off that Ford won't recognize they have a problem & fix it. We ended up getting a rebuilt transmission installed.
