I finally found a decent deal on an engine and tranny from a 2004 Ranger, will there be any problems using this year in my 1999 Explorer?

engine wiring harness

I seem to recall that the injector wiring is different on the Rangers. You probably need to use the Explorer engine wiring harness. You may also need to use only the long block. Other than that, I doubt there will be any problems.

Right, I will use my intake and wiring if necessary. Just wanted to make sure there were not any changes to the engine to be concerned about.

I got the engine and it has a complete intact wiring harness and ranger manifold, if possible I would like to leave all this together. Any idea if there would be any problems with 99 ECU? I don't have pinouts for them to compare.

Ok, It sounds like I am in uncharted waters here, I will give it a try and see what happens

Keep us posted. Would open up options for replacement motors.

Finally made some time to look at the new engine and compare to the one in my 99, looks like too many differences with the upper intake to bother trying to use the 04 intake, the thermostat housing looks the same, has two sensors in it. The fuel rails are different as well, mainly the pressure port is on the back passenger side instead of easy to get to like the 99 on the front driver side so I will probably use the 99 fuel rails as well. I pulled the valve covers and this engine looks extremely clean.

The injectors in my 99 are orange and the 04 are blue, are these a different size? I need to figure out which ones to use.

I am attempting to remove the intake from my 99 in the truck to prepare for pulling the engine. I have removed all the bolts I can find that hold the upper intake to the lower and the EGR tube bracket but it still won't come off. There must be something hidden holding it on but I cannot find it. Any Ideas?

Use your 99 injectors. As you said the fuel rails are different, and I believe the injector harness plugs are different as well.

Still can't find what is holding the upper in, any one know how many bolts hold the upper to the lower. Thanks for the input on the injectors.

It's tough to pull the EGR tube out of the intake. There are also some harder to get to bolts in the back, but nothing I can remember that is especially hidden.

When I swapped in the Ranger engine, I used all of the external parts to my SOHC. Upper and lower intake manifolds, all wiring, injectors, valve cover gaskets, oil pan, etc.

If you do not have a message center, you may not have to swap oil pans...my pan had a low level sensor that the Ranger pan did not.

I did use the thermostat housing from the Ranger, as it is an updated style that you can buy replacement parts for - I had to get another temp sender for the gauge, that matched the plug on my original harness. I think I used the old upper portion of the housing, as the Ranger one is clocked a little differently.

According to my service manual there are 12 bolts in the upper manifold.

So there must be more that I have not seen, I will have to get a better look at it later this week.

Thanks

I disconnected the EGR tube from the driver side head and it is not holding anything back. I am glad you mentioned the oil pan I didnt realize there was a extra sensor in there.

Thanks for all the input

I have removed the engine and tranny and have discovered another difference in 99 vs. 2004 engines. The 99 has a PCV chamber in the valley made of plastic that connects to a freeze plug location directly above the jack shaft. Of course it broke when I tried to remove it. The 2004 doesn't have anything there presumably the PCV just vents through the valve covers since they are different. My question is how could I removed the freeze plug in the new engine without getting any junk in the engine, or shoud I drill and tap the drivers side valve cover for a new port for the PCV?

Screw a sheet metal screw into the freeze plug, grab it with a claw hammer and it should come out.

Ok, sounds easy enough, before I do that thought I will have to call Ford and make sure the replacement part is available/cheap.

Good idea...

I am going to skip the weird PCV box on the 99 and just try to use the 04 valve covers for the breather.

Also on the 99 engine the rear chain guide failed and the chain is rubbing on the pivot bolt. That said I would sell this engine cheap to someone willing to repair the timing chain in the rear. Other than the chain problem is still intact and ran ok before being pulled. I don't want buy the timing tool or bother with any of that, just need to sell this engine. Please let me know if anyone is interested matt@newstylecustoms.com
