Twice in the past month my explorer has shut off while driving without any warning. The dash displays "Check Fuel Cap". I take it off and put it back on and it starts up fine. It is running perfect before and after it shuts off. Should I replace the cap or what should I do? My wife drives it mostly and commutes on a busy highway the last thing I want is for it to shut off then. That would be a bad program if it were to happen.

My '04 EB (66K) did the same thing only w/o the gas cap light. Did it several times before I took it into the dealer for a fix. They stated they could not find any reason for the shut-down but re-flashed the computer. I have not had a shut-down since and that was about a year ago. They fixed it under the warranty so I didn't get too involved in the reasons that mey have caused the problem.

my mounty NEVER displays "check fuel cap" when i drive with my cap off (have done this twice in the past two months)

I had my 05 Exploder XLT do this a couple times while putting cruise control on while going downhill. It goes to like 300 RPM, then stalls out with that same message. Were you using CC?

There was another member on here a while back that had a very similar issue... With the cruise set, while coasting downhill on his daily drive home, it would stall EVERY TIME. He did, eventually, get it fixed, but I don't recall what the solution was. He even had video of it happening on two consecutive passes over the bridge where it happened...
