2005 Explorer transmission only moves in 1st/2nd

well i started on it earlier tonite and so far its been quite a nightmare

I have about 4 to 5 hrs in it and i don't even have the crossmember or exhaust completely off.

all the bolts on the bottom of the crossmember have snapped off.

about the only thing that has gone right is taking off the drive shafts.

I have no idea how to get the 2 upper bolts out of the right side of the crossmember without taking the gas tank off and I already have an idea of how well thats gonna go.

and while i was underneath I noticed it has a reman tag on it. so this is already its second transmission so maybe if i do ever get it out maybe i will just fix it and put it back in since it should have the updates.

then i'm gonna suggest they sell the damn thing cause i'm not ever gonna do this again.

I'm thinking of trying to get a 2006-2010 V8 4x4 before ever doing any transmission work.

If it is a Motorcraft Reman it will not have any "updates" it will be as produced. Some remanufacture company's will do some critical updates. Most not. Good luck! Let us know how it turns out.

i'm guessing since they bought it with 72,000 miles on it that is most likely a factory reman then.

I guess i'll go the reman route then if i ever get the transmission out.

I stopped at advance auto last night and checked into the reman's and they also have the Moveras brand transmission, don't know what the difference is but they said the transmission doesn't come with a torque convertor and thats like an extra 300.

but if i get one through Oreillys it comes withe reman torque convertor. wth.

What a rip off.

well i made some headway earlier tonite, after loosening the gas tanks straps and wedging a couple thing boards between the frame the tank i could at least get a socket and wrench on it decently, but then i had to heat the backside of the bolt with a map torch and it finally gave up and i was able to get the crossmember and exhaust off.

then i was able to get the transfer case off. so i took at little break and decided that was enough for the night and i'll finish taking the transmission out tomorrow, hopefully its smooth sailing from here. until i have to put it back in of course.

Sounds like you are moving right along. Good luck! You got this.

alright so i got the transmission out and on the floor. now i just need to get a new one, not sure which brand to get yet.

that and i have to get the 4 bolts out of the frame and i have to replace one of the exhaust studs because the threads stripped out when i took off one of the nuts. I only have 2 more days off and then i'm back to work for 8 days so i won't get anything else done until the following week.

If you do order from Advanced fo you know if you can order it online to have shipped to your local store for pickup? If so there are discount codes you might be able to apply and save some good money. I really like dealing with my local Advanced and do this frequently

unfortunately no you can't order online and pickup you have to order it at the store.

I stopped at Oreilly's and had them check it out and that don't have it in stock at any facility they would have to ship it from the factory to the store and it sounds like there is a shipping charge for that.

such a cluster.... to get anything figured out.

I may go back to advance auto tomorrow and talk to someone else because on the website it says the ETE comes with torque convertor which is not what they said the other day.

otherwise the guy at Oreilly's said a local transmission shop may be able to rebuild this one for a decent price, so i may look into that as well, i just want something that's going to last awhile as i don't know how long they are going to have this vehicle.

I agree go to Advance and ask to speak with Manager or Assistant. My guy here local was able to get into a system and order a caliper for my Jaguar that they don't even list in the counter computers or website and had it sent from their distribution to our store same day. He said they have a system he can access and to just ask them next time something comes up.

yeah i meant to stop in there tonite but of course they close at 8 so i by the time i got to town they were closed, I'll have to try and do it before work sometime this week.

i could always go the napa route because its kind of on the way to work for me. but then i'd have to pay a bit more and their website lists no specifics on what brand they are or what they come with.

alright so i'm getting ready to start putting this thing back together, instead of extracting the broken bolts etc. i was able to just use an air hammer and punch them out of the frame and i'm gonna feed some carriage bolts in through the side of the frame instead to fasten the cross member back on.

but first i had to get the stripped out stud out of the manifold well i decided to remove the whole left side manifold from the engine and take it into where i work so i could use the torch to get it hot enough to remove, i took both out as i already had bought the stud kit.

well when i got home i found out the new studs are bigger and everywhere i look them up it shows the same part no. so i guess i need to go back to the store and see if they have any smaller stud kits, plus i need to get a new manifold gasket anyways.

does anyone know offhand what size studs they are to mount the pipe to the manifold? or know what kit is used for it?

thanks.

well i had a bit of screwing around tonight but I have the new transmission bolted in with transfer case reinstalled exhaust attached to the manifolds, starter put back in and the crossmember reinstalled. and all the wiring hooked back up, i also changed the fuel filter since it was out in the open once the exhaust was off etc.

I ended up having to use bolts for the left manifold because i couldn't find exhaust studs anywhere the right size.

all i have left is to put the exhaust pipe back together at the muffler and put the driveshafts back in and then fill it with fluid.

I was gonna throw the shafts in before i went home but i found that the u-joint on the front driveshaft needs to be replaced so i said to hell with it and quit for the night well early morning at this point.

so hopefully I'll get the shafts in either tomorrow or sunday and then having a running unit by sunday.

what a job. but in the end i hope it'll be worth it, its all free labor for the parents so I'll be saving them a bit of money.

finished it sat afternoon, all i had left was to put the shafts on after i changed the joint and attach the pipe to the muffer, filled it with fluid and took it for a drive and all seems to be well. i brought it back in and checked the fill.

I'm gonna make sure i check the fluid level again sometime by the end of the week or next week to make sure its good to go.

all in all it wasn't terrible, just a few hang ups along the way. it was just the time i had to arrange to do it and the tools i had to haul back and forth from work to home etc.

I'm glad i decided to just punch out the bolt inserts and run carriage bolts through the frame instead of trying to extract the bolts or weld studs on.

Thanks for the update and great job . You may want to reboot or "brain dead" the computer to set everything back to factory defaults. Just so the new transmission and computer play well together.

i did unhook the battery and left it unhooked until i put the starter back in so i hope that'll do it.
