What is the difference between the 2003 and the 2004 then? As far as I can tell the are exactly the same. Donner's setup looks exactly the same as mine does from what I can tell in the pictures.
In '04, the big change to the air intake is that the MAF housing and airbox are one piece, not separate as I understand the early 3rd-gens are. Also, the '04 engines went from a mechanical throttle cable to an electronic throttle-by-wire system.

In theory then, if a person had an aftermarket MAF housing, they should be able to use an FIPK from a 2003 on a 2004. The throttle cable should not effect the air intake system forward of the throttle body. Just a though.
So I talked to K&N on the phone today for a little. They said if enough people seemed interested they would send it to their Research & Development team to start production. If you drive a 2004-2005 v6 you know there aren't many options as far as intakes go, so please go to http://www.knfilters.com/products_needed/default.aspx?yr=2004&mk=FORD&md=Explorer&en=4.0L and fill out the form. It takes no more than 30 seconds. Thanks!
Yes, you could slap on any air filter and call it a day if you have the MAF housing (either an aftermarket one or (what I plan to do) by cutting the housing off of the stock airbox and sticking a filter onto that.
From what I understand, though, you cannot use a a full intake kit that includes a new "pipe" from the old 3rd gens on the newer ones (not sure why, but that's what I understand).
