Hi guys,

I just got an explorer two weeks ago, I thought everything was all good on it when I got it. It has been serviced every 5000km at the dealership that sold it, it had the 140k service done just 500km before I got it from the guy. New brakes were fitted all round just before I got it, then engine sounded ok, oil etc was recently changed so hard to tell if it is using or burning oil, but it all looked ok.
The family I got it from used it to pick up groceries, never taken offroad, they upgraded to a used Expedition. So all checked out and I took the dive and got it.

Within a day of having it, it seemed that the gearchange under heavy acceleration wasnt too smooth, but I also noticed the road surface was crap on that part of the road so dismissed it.

Two weeks later, I find that when im accelerating uphill it doesnt want to shift into 5th, it kind of got stuck going from 5th to 4th and back to 5th etc, until I eased off the acceleration then it was fine again.

I have tested it a bit yesterday, I found an uphill stretch next to a wall, so put the windows down and hit the gas, when it gets to the point of hessitation, there is a horrible grinding screaming noise coming from somewhere.

It drives fine around town without giving it any hard accel. It goes up into 5th fine when taking it easy. infact the gearbox is very smooth, you cant even feel the gear changes most of the time.

My question is:
what do you guys think is the most likely candidate for the problem, I assume the gearbox overdrive servo from reading around.

Would I be able to get away with driving it easy for a few months? Or is this something that will get quickly worse and leave me stranded?
Will I take out other parts of the engine etc if I leave it until it fails? or is it best to have it looked at now before its too bad?

thanks in advance guys.

If it drives smooth when taking it easy, that's what I'd do.

thats the conclusion I came to, I have spoken to some friends who own the same vehicle, and im sure they dont realise they are also having problems,

I will just take it easy until it needs a rebuild, just spoke to a guy today with 200k km on his and not a problem, so fingers crossed
