At a bit of a loss, took off the front brackets, fan, related components and did move the air cleaner top to the side to install waterpump.
Filled with cooilant and it now starts and shuts down, sounds like it is running its diagnose and finding a issue, no codes pulling, scanner shows fuel press is good.
Before I put in teh pump I dorve it into the garage.
When taking off the pump it did spill cooliant on the plug for the clutch, and the crank shaft sensor. I sprayed both down , and let dry with electronic parts cleaner.
not sure if these are the issue. Also, I have read about IACs and know they are issues with fords, and the maf has a plug that won't lock in place. I did push it back in hard but not sure if that might be it.
Any ideas? I am at a bit of a loss right now. Starts, holds start for 14 seconds, can rev the engine but it won't hold.

no theft light, no codes, using an older actron scan tool to monitor the running engine.

Starts, holds start for 14 seconds,
is it idling rough and what not? or does it suddenly drop? also clutch plug? i don thtink an MT was offered on 4gs. also v6 or 8

Check the intake tube for any loose hoses. The MAF should plug in and you shouldn't be able to pull it back out. Also check the wires going to MAF sensor

His fan clutch is electric controlled, won't keep it from running. If there's something wrong with the crank sensor it will crank but won't actually run. I'm thinking big vacuum leak

oh i didnt know there were e fans on these! yeag i wonder if it doesnt idke well and then dies probably a vac leak. but if it purrs then drops, dunno.

Once on a different vehicle (older 3800 GM), I got a water pump that was defective and a lot of drag on the engine. The belt routing must have had enough contact on the pulley that the belt didn't slip.

For this reason, I'd take the belt off and see if it continues to run, but for only a little while (half minute enough?) with all accessories off, since it's draining the battery. I'd also charge up the battery ahead of time if these attempts so far have drained it some.

If not that, I'd suspect a vac leak.
... and did move the air cleaner top to the side
Maybe a crack in the intake after the MAF?

Check your wiring harnesses by the connectors. I was just going through my kid's 07 4.0 and most of the harnesses on top of the engine (MAF, coil pack, throttle body) and even the one that went to the O2 sensor were brittle and busted and crossed. Every wire. I have never seen anything like it before, but some of them blew a fuse and sent a bunch of codes. You probably had to move some of those to put that water pump in.

The other thing... I do believe there is a wiring harness that travels beneath that water pump that goes to the alternator... might be something to check for.

This is the same thing I was thinking. I found this on mine after changing something and fixed it before any issue showed it's head.
