2006 Explorer 6 speed transmission shifting issue - update

I *think* I feel a bump sometimes, but it's between 30-20 not between 10 and 0 like the TSB says. It feels like the shift from 3rd to 2nd and not so much from 2nd to 1st, and it isn't very noticeable.

So like I said it seems like my Explorer isn't showing any symptoms and things are working properly, but I need to know if I should have the TSB done anyway; is this one of those issues that IS an issue, and while I may not have it now, will certainly have it later? Any owners out there gone 50k+ miles without having this issue at all?

OK to know if you have a problem, drive on freeway for a while, exit/come off the freeway after work and if i don't feather the brakes to a stop .. BUMP!
Assuming by "feather" you mean "brake slowly", that is the only time I get the bump. If I slow down quickly, there is no bump.. just while basically coasting while dragging the brake does it bump.

I agree though about taking it on the highway and doing this while exiting. Doesn't seem to do it as much for me if I only get up to 30-40mph.

Basically if driving over 50mph and are not coming to a quick/hard stop you can be sure you will get the bump without the TSB

Okay, we are on the same page after all.

OP, I would not get the TSB unless you have the 2-1 issue. 3-2, if it is happening, I suspect is minimal. The 2-1 could potentially cause an accident.

I have the 2-1 pretty severely at times, but I just don't get right up on people when coming to a stop . . . at least not till after it has bumped down.

ok thanks guys. I'm not going to worry about it then (for now). I think if it was that bad I'd definitely notice it!

Yeah you would notice it.. like someone bumped your back bumper...

I do not know if this is the same but I have a 2006 AWD mercury mountaineer problem with harsh bump when accelerating. It feels like the rearend is going in and out of traction lock.

It's doing that UNDER acceleration? yeah that is NOT the same and could be a much more serious issue. Don't think I have heard of that issue.

I had it to the dealership no codes fixed nothing. To a transmission shop nothing found.

Had computer reset, new fluid, filter, pan cleaned and found very little on magnet.

My 2007 Explorer V8 is at 75k and i have always had the bumping problem and just lived with it. I feel it is starting to get annoying and I am bringing it to the dealer soon. I called 4 different dealers and they all told me that they are not aware of this issue. Are they playing dumb? They are going to update the software and see if that works. from what i have read it is not going to. Oh boy...

Are they playing dumb? YES
Software update (latest) seems to mostly take care of it..

I can not even pull into traffic without a power loss.

I hope the software takes care of it because I can't even seel it this way. The second someone stops with it deal over.

Man I did have a power loss, but it was related to bad gas and I used SeaFoam to clean out and dry up the water in the system. It took 3 tanks and a spark plug change to correct the probelm. I think i still need to have my feul rail and injectors cleaned. I hope your problem gets corrected.

This shifting issue is NOT for acceleration but when coming to a stop - completely different issues.

Not sure if that is being directed at me, but I already know that. Amazing how the service managers for the few Ford dealers I caled are acting like they know nothing of this. Well, if it don't exist than I should have no problems when trading it in... I'll just say that I have no knowlege of it either. LOL:)

Probably a good idea to just have the latest TSB number handy.

You're suggesting they should remember every mundane issue every car on their lot had upwards of 3-4 years ago? I do not think that is very realistic. This issue did not happen to everyone and not everyone that it does happen to (like me) has it bad enough to pay to be fixed.

My 06 LTD has been doing it since day one of my ownership (42k miles) but I did not notice it during the test drive as I was actually stopping to check the brakes, not to see how well it would coast. It startles my passengers when they first get in but once I explain that no one just rear ended us, everything is fine.

Did you just put the SeaFoam in the gas tank or in the throttle body also?

Mundane issue??? I respectfully disagree with that description of this very serious issue. 2006-2009 V8 Explorers have had this surging issue since day 1. To date the fix has been a software update and in most of the cases that fix has been temporary. The problem has returned after a few weeks in most cases from what I am reading.
Do you understand what is going on here?
The trucks affected have been surging or bumping as the vehicle comes to a stop. Mine as with many others has been surging almost 12 inches after that stop and on the break! This means that when parking or stopping with a vehicle or person in a crosswalk their is a real danger of surging into them. So when you say that Ford service reps can't remember or don't know about this "mundane" issue I think that you totally misrepresent the danger and weight of this issue. This issue started 3-4 years and is still not resolved! Opinions are like assholes, we all have them, but when a problem becomes dangerous to the vehicle occupants and bystanders, it needs to be addressed and not brushed under the carpet. Ford is known for being re-active and not proactive as we remember with the Firestone tire issues... How many has to die or ascertain injuries before they blinked?
I have this issue documented by my attorney and he will be following this case and what direction Ford takes in response. There are thousands of vehicles affected with this issue and Ford needs to have a recall with a working fix.
I mean no disrespect to anyone.

I put the SeaFoam directly into the fuel tank. It took almost 4 treatments to completely remove the water. Before i used the SeaFoam I did use a hand pump to remove the water at the bottom of the tank. almost 1 gallon was removed.
I was returning home from out of state when I stopped for gas in Maryland. I noticed that the station's tanks were being filled and I expressed concern to the station rep. He said that the new pumps have water filters and there will be no problems. He was WRONG! Never fill your tank when the stations tanks are being filled.

Fire- do what you feel is necessary but I think it is worth it to find a dealer whom you can rely on and have the truck reflashed. You said in your other post that you've been living with it for the last few years, why get so bent now? If they make you pay for the reflash, so be it, nothing stopped you from taking your truck in when under warranty.
good luck, I hope the reflash works for you.
