Hey everyone I'm new here, actually new to any forum as well. So not totally sure if I am doing this right....anyway I have a 2006 explorer with 83,000 miles. It's an xlt with no rear a/c or auto climate just normal. When the ac is on I hear a consistent ticking from glove box area, but not at idle normally just driving arou d or at take off. If I turn the ac off and just leave vent on it goes away as with heat. And it feels like driver side vents fluctuate from ice cold to a little warmer. Any ideas what this could be? Thanks in advance.

thanks for a response, is the actuator behind glove box. i thought it was located on driver side bottom panel? like where my shin would be while driving?

You are correct on the location of the single blend door actuator on your truck. The vacuum control motor for the air inlet door is behind the glove box. If the vacuum is not steady then possibly the air inlet door could be flapping. A passenger may be able to see the motor/door operating with the glove box door released and hanging down.

Good luck.

so heres an update...i was told recently the compressor was kicking on and off to prevent evaporator from icing over. the sound I'm hearing from glove box area is some kind of ac cycling switch doing what it is supposed to. does this sound right? the air blows real cold...

The A/C cycling switch is on the accumulator/drier which is mounted on the passenger side of the engine compartment very close to the firewall behind which is the glovebox. Lines connect the evaporator to the accumulator and then on to the A/C compressor. You could listen to it with the hood open. The A/C compressor clutch engaging usually makes a more noticeable sound than the switch (if it makes any noise at all). The compressor is at the front of the engine.

Once you have a feel for the cycling noise under the hood you will have a better chance of relating it to the noise behind the glove box inside the truck.

Good luck.

so my compressor is cycling on and off a lot and it is some kind of switch or relay i hear from the glove box area, i recently just heard it on my dads f150 as well so im thinking its normal. about 6 months ago the condensor was replaced because it had a hole in it...ford says everything is normal and that the ac is working so efficient that its turning on and off to keep evap from freezing.
