If this is a repeat I apologize in advance but I didn't see this one when I looked.

Have 06 Explorer XLT 4.0 and I can not get the change oil light to reset on the instrument panel. I have always changed my oil every 3 - 3.5 K miles and been able to reset the message when it would come on in the past. Now I have tried at least a dozen times and the warning keeps coming up every time I restart the vehicle. Now I am getting the service indicator (wrench) light while driving. I have a friend that has a computer and he plugged it in and can see no codes of any kind. He even tried to clear everything with his computer with no luck. The message has gone from oil change recommended to needed and I think that is what is tripping the service light now. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated thanks.

There should be a reset button. If not, unplug battery and wait for 10 or so minutes, all memory should be gone.

have you tried holding down the setup and reset buttons simultaneously? sometimes that works for me, but it can be finicky.

On my 08 there is only one button. One push cycles you through the menu, and a press and hold gets you into the submenus.

I haven't tried unhooking the battery but I will give that a try thanks for the advise.

If the reset button doesnt work unhooking battery resets all memmory... nothing survives! :)

Yes I have tried that but still would not reset but thanks for trying to help.

Yes mine only has the one button as well but going to give Fix4Dirt suggestion a good and hope I get it fixed.

I appreciate everyone's help. I am in the northern tip of the tropical storm and we are being told 5 - 8 inches of rain over the next 24 hours so will not be outside working on the Explorer today. Hope all those here that are south of me make it through all the rain without troubles.

Will let you guys know how I make out in a day or so, Thanks again.

Well I had a window of just a very fine mist instead of rain so I went out and unhooked the battery. After just under an hour I hooked positive cable back up and started the vehicle. The change oil message is still there and although I haven't driven anywhere yet I would have to believe the service light will come on shortly after I start driving which is what it has been doing for the past 2 weeks now. Even tried once again resetting the oil message in the main menu, get to the hold button to clear hold until it moves to the next reset option (door locks I think it was). Shut the engine off wait 10 mins and restart oil change required still comes back.

I realize that the oil is good and as I said no codes are coming up so the service light has to be because the computer thinks an oil change is needed so not going to hurt anything buy driving. It's just a pain to have the light come on every time you start the engine and one has to cancel the message in order to see the normal info on the dash. More importantly this it primarily the wife's daily driver and with the service light on she really can't know for sure if something else may need to be addressed.

So anyone else that may have an other option for me to correct this issue I am open to other suggestions.

Have you checked in the owners manual for instructions? If you don't have one, you can download it.

Yes have reset it according to the manual and still will not set the message.

Sorry I may have mispoke- to clear all memory (nothing survives this one!) you unplug the battery for 10 minutes, shutting the engine off wont do anything. Just disconnect the negative terminal.

No you didn't, you did say unhook the battery which I did but I unhooked the positive cable instead of negative cable. After and hour I reconnected and started engine and the message came back on again. So I went through the reset procedure than shut off engine for 10 mins and restarted to see if the reset had worked and it didn't.

Oh, yes positive lead will work too. Huh, thats actually really interesting! I wonder if theres some permanent memory for that? Odd... Sorry about that.

No need to apologize. I do appreciate the suggestion, in this case it didn't work but still you were trying to help so thanks.
