Hello,
I am new to this forum, so thanks in advance for any help. Here is what has been happening.
Vehicle: 2007 Explorer 4.0L, 70,000 miles.
Problem: Last week ymptoms starting appearing. Nothing out of the ordianry before that. I noticed a belt squeal, and power steering dropped very briefly after start up 2 or 3 times. I planned to check/change the tensioner, belt, and any pulleys that were bad this weekend. 1 or 2 times, the engine died just after start up while at idle during this same period, which confused me.
Yesterday, Wife was driving car when the engine died while going about 40 mph. Then, the car would not start. It turns over fine, it just doesn't crank. So, it seems like either fuel or spark. I did not have many tools with me, so I did the fuel pump reset, checked the fuel pump and PCM relays for clicking, and listened for fuel pump with key in on. The fuel pump was activating. Thus, I moved on to spark and towed the vehicle home to start checking that today. I did unhook the battery for an hour or so and tried again last night. Still wouldn't start.
This morning, the truck started on the first crank. I moved it about 20 feet so it was out of the way, and was looking under the hood while running when it died again. It didnt sputter or buck; it just smoothly died. I started again and it started, I revved it up a bit and it died again. Started again and ran for about 5 seconds, then died. Now it will not start again.
After reading a number of threads last night, I was convinced it may be the CPS. It is not the anti-theft, I dont think, because the light neither blinks nor remains on brightly while trying to crank. Now it seems to be acting like a fuel problem this morning...
I pulled and reinstalled fuel pump relay, did the reset again, and the pump is activating in the key on position. Still will not start. It turns over fine as before.
So the question is: where do I go from here. I dont want to just throw parts at it. We just bought it used about 3 months ago, and I haven't noticed anything unusual, but I have no maintenance records etc.
My brother in law, who knows infinitely more about auto engines than I do, is coming over later to help me out for a while. We will check the fuel pressure and spark, etc, and I will update anything new.
If the fuel pressure is off, then that makes the diagnosis easier. Assuming the fuel pressure is right, but spark isn't, what should I check first, and how do I check it?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I can do the mechanical stuff, but whenever things go to the sensor/computer side I am out on a limb...
