I just purchased a 2007 Explorer v6 SOHC today and after driving it home (about an hour drive) I shut it off and then when I restarted it about 5 minutes later it sputtered like it was going to die and the RPMs went up and down like crazy. Once I gave it some gas it stopped. I have found it does this every time I start it if it hasn't been turned off for at least a half hour between start ups. Anyone have this happen? This is my 6th explorer and I have never experienced this before with any of them. Hoping I didnt purchase something that is going to need an expensive repair right off the bat.

My 06, V6 will occasionally have a uneven idle after starting. Almost surging but with low RPMS.
Maybe a fuel pressure issue but does not do it enough to troubleshoot.

Clears out once you get going.

I too feel your pain, I bought my son a 2006 and immediately started having problems. I did get a check engine light that I was able to work with. I changed the dpfe sensor (P0401 code) and removed the throttle body and cleaned it really good. I also bought some MAF sensor cleaner and clean it. I like to clean things before doing the part swapping. if you do clean the MAF sensor, make sure you by the proper cleaner or you will be buying a new sensor and they are not cheap. My explorer was having some really rough starts. A few starts I thought something was going to break it turned off so hard when I was cranking it to start. Hopefully someone here will have a better answer.

Sounds like throttle body issues, but it could be fuel pressure issues too since you indicate that it only does it when starting with the motor already hot. I would get a code reader and check the fuel pressure readings on it and see if its throwing any codes upon startup.
