Ford wows SEMA crowd with Mustang Cobra Jet dragster, but don't expect to buy one

If you want a guaranteed thrill for the crowd at the nation's biggest aftermarket products show for the auto industry, SEMA, just haul out a a high-octane wonder.
Ford reached into that familiar playbook to create the Cobra Jet Mustang, a name steeped in racing lore going back to the NHRS Winternationals in 1968. Meant entirely for the track, the 40th Anniversary 2008 Cobra Jet Mustang lived up to the original with its success on drag strips over the past year.
“The 2008 Cobra Jet was a great car, it did everything we wanted it to do,” said Brian Wolfe, head of Ford's North American racing program. “We’re really proud of the car." Easy to see why when you see what makes it not only special, but exclusive:
The 2010 Cobra Jet, like its predecessor, is a factory-built race car that is intended for NHRA stock and super-stock racing. Ford is going to make 50 of them, and all of them have already been claimed by dealers. The 2010 CJ will come with all of the features of the 2008 car with enhancements that include options for a full race-prepared automatic or manual transmission, drag race-specific shocks and springs, manual steering and brakes, 8.50 certified roll cage, and an Aeromitive return-style fuel system with trunk-mounted fuel cell. It will be built at Flat Rock, Mich., right next to the line where Mustangs are produced and deliveries begin next year.
Additionally Ford engineers have developed for the 2010 Cobra Jet a factory-first launch control/rev limiter that will allow drivers to preset the rpm after they stage the car.
