I've been unsuccessful in finding a source for skid plates for our EB and have searched this site and others. We'll be doing a basic lift but can only go to 32" tires. While we do not do extreme off-roading, we do level 4/5 Moab class roads so I am concerned about armor. Any suggestions before I have plates custom made?

Use 3/16" thick steel if you want real strength, that's about the only suggestion I can think of.
I actually don't know of anyone that has done skids on a 4th Gen - keep us updated.

Good luck.

Custom skid plate or bull bar with skid plate

Got under the EB today and making a custom skid plate to protect the rad seems daunting espcially when you have to leave room to get at the engine oil filter. I'm back to considering if a bull bar with skid plate will be an easier answer. But will the aftermarket product like Aries do the trick?

I'm not going to attempt to put armor under the monster gas tank.

Having seen beneath, I'll definietly go ahead with the lift kit.

on my 08 v8 i was able to get the factory skid for the gas tank. Its a tough polymer type material. Also got the factory steel transfer case skid. For the front diff i used a h3 factory steel transfer case skid bolted to the explorer front crossmember that works perfect. I made my own front skid to protect the bottom of the radiator , its aluminum and must be removed to get to the oil filter.None reduce approach angle or ground clearance. All are very stout and protect the bottom of the explorer pretty well. Can i bounce off giant boulders with it , no , but for protection from things kicking up off the trail or sliding along deep mud ruts they work great. I use my truck to get to hunting and fishing spots , not hardcore off roading. So far it has taken me everywhere ive needed to go , when it doesnt I will get into something more off road capable.

Thanks for the reply Daspud. What you have is what I'm aiming for.

OEM Skid Plates

The build sheet for our EB says no skid plates were installed. When I was under the truck, I was surprised to see plastic where the fuel tank is. Mystery solved - it's an oem skid plate.

My ford parts guy says that there are only plates for the fuel tank and transfer case, not for the radiator.

He used a Hummer H3 transfer case skid plate.

The radiator skid I custom made from thick aluminum , the front diff is protected by a h3 hummer transfer case skid bolted to the front suspension crossmember. The h3 skid is a nice steel piece about 10 to 12 inches wide by 14 inches long and fits pefectly.
