I have "whoosh" coming from under the hood and I can hear it while inside the vehicle. I opened the hood and the fan is making a lot of noise and while driving home today I heard what sounded like something had come loose under the hood and banged around but when I looked I see a lot of black plastic/rubber shavings in the front of the engine compartment. I don't see anything missing and everything runs fine except the noise from the fan. I figure I need to get the fan clutch replaced but the shavings are puzzling. Any ideas? Thanks.

Without seeing the residue, it either has to be a belt coming apart or bits of a plastic shroud caused by a disintegrating belt. Those belts are pretty long and a section of it might be missing that is not easy to see.

It turns out the problem was that my ac compressor basically disintegrated inside the housing and that is where all the shavings came from. I guess it's a good thing that it happened because while in the shop they discovered there is a leak between the transmission and the engine and that the power steering has a small leak and it is all covered under warranty. Now I am glad that I bought the Gap Warranty on my used Explorer.
