2012 Explorer base transmission thumps

After my transmission was replaced i started to hear clicks and pops but the dealer insisted that there was nothing wrong. Ford finally agreed to offer an extended warranty for 75k miles for 500 parts with $100 deductible. I really love my explorer but just hope nothing major happens again. It's the worst feeling knowing you have to take a brand new car into a dealer for several days. i wish you luck.

PLEASE HELP!! My 2012 Limited has 17K miles on it and it too has this intermittent banging from the tranny.. and when I say bang I mean like loud enough that it scares the hell out of me because I think somone has hit me.
I just heard from my local Ford Service Dept where they clain "can not duplicate", after I explained IN DETAIL when and how it happens.. This "bang"has been happening for about 2 months now.
I am totally frustrated and annoyed with my Local Ford Service Dept. I don't even want to pick up my truck.
Should I take it to another Ford Service Department?
PLEASE HELP!

Hi Obxbeachbum14,

I want to get your regional customer service manager involved by escalating your case. Send me a private message (PM) with your info (VIN, dealer, mileage, daytime phone number, and full name) and I'll get to work.

I too have been having this issue with my Explorer. I had service look at it and they could not recreate the "thump" either. It seems to happen to me the most if I coast from about 40-45 down to about 15 or so then apply gas.

I'll be watching this thread to see if any new news appears.

Thanks
Guy

Hi Guy,

I want to extend the same offer of assistance to you that I have to other customers. To do so, send me a PM with your info (VIN, dealer, mileage, daytime phone number, full name) and I'll start investigating options.

I've had the same hard thump happen to me twice, both at low speeds, after decelerating then accelerating, as if the transmission had a hard time getting into the lower gear before stepping on the accelerator.

Since it's only happened twice, and I attributed it to my opinion above, I haven't taken it in. As long as I'm not rolling one direction and changing gears for the opposite, I haven't had the thump happen, and I haven't been able to reproduced the problem with hard and medium deceleration followed by acceleration.

Changing transmissions seems extreme, and not a reliable fix as the previous poster mentioned.

Please keep posting your experiences. Very helpful to know others have the same issue.

Hi Untamed,

I know we've been in touch before, but if you'd like to make an appointment at your dealership to get this resolved, send me a PM with your current mileage and I'll get your CSM looped in again.

It seems like you want to hold off on a dealer visit for now; just let me know if/when you want to move forward.

I am new to this forum, but I have experienced the thumping as well in my transmission. I thought I was the only one. I just called my Ford dealer and have an appointment next week. I hope they don't dismiss me either. Wish me luck!

Give me a heads up when you hear back from your dealership, cyber8. If you need any assistance, just send a PM my way.

Thank you Crystal. I will let you know the outcome next Tuesday (3/5).

Hello All,
I joined the forum because I am experiencing similar trany problems with my 2012 Explorer. 34K miles.

When slowing from 40-50mph then reapplying the accelerator there is a violent "thump". This has happened 6-7 times in the past month. I took it to local dealer who said computer scan showed nothing and could not duplicate on road test.

So now what??? Keep driving it until the trany parts a laying in the street?

I hope this tread will lead to a common resolution for all effected.

Well guys you can add me to the group! Took my 2012 Explorer to the dealer this week and they couldn't recreate my transmission thumping problem either. And the computer scans showed nothing also. Hopefully we all will have some resolution to this issue. If not, I guess Ford will have a lot of broken transmission complaints.

same here. The foreman from dealer took a test drive with me and said it is explorer's "charcteristc". I guess there is nothing we can do, but just wait till it broken.

Hi Hercules,

That'll happen just after the warranty runs out!

Well guys I just got off the phone with my regional service manager (thank you Crystal for making that happen), and NOTHING got resolved! I was basically told if it happens again to go back to the dealer. I told her that if it does not happen at the dealer, they are going to give me the same answer. Ford I hope you are listening....THIS IS NOT A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM! There is obviously more than one person having this issue. And you are obviously aware of the issue if there is a TSB on it. Telling customer that we have a 5 year 60K warranty on our transmissions is not a solution. I guess we all just have to wait till the transmission breaks AFTER the warranty expires. BRAVO FORD....Great Customer Experience.

Hi cyber8,

I recommend driving straight to the dealership the next time this occurs so that your service tech can hear this noise and inspect your vehicle. Dealerships need to be able to replicate concerns before they can properly diagnose them. I know this can be frustrating, especially for intermittent issues. If you'd prefer, you can go to a different Ford dealership for a second opinion. I know multiple service visits aren't a fun way to spend your time, but I did want to make sure you were aware of some additional options.

I am sorry Crystal those are NOT additional options, but the same response. And going to a different Ford dealer will be more frustrating because I would have to explain myself over again. What is really irritating is that Ford knows about this problem and admits it in a TSB. So why can it just be fixed! Just like the A-pillar TSB that fixed the wind noise that was annoying. Also customer's don't have the luxury to run to a dealership at the moments notice. Or take time off from work to bring their vehicle over and over again.Only to be told that they could not recreate a problem. Sorry, I am not satisfied with this out come.
