2015 Explorer strange reverse lights issue

Good morning,
I just got a 2015 ford explorer and the reverse light were not working. I checked the bulbs and they were fine. Here is the weird part, with the key on and engine off i shifted into reverse and the lights will always work no matter how many times i change gears. Now when I turn the engine on and shift to reverse the lights only come on momentarily and turn right back off. Any ideas what my problem may be? I thought maybe a bad sensor but why would it work with the engine off vs. running?

Welcome to the Forum.
It seems there is no end to some of these strange issues popping up. As far as I know, this is the first such report. I wonder if it could be a grounding issue that only comes into play when the engine is running?

Running into the same issue, both lights are fine and the fuse is good, I changed the fuse and lights just to be sure and nothing, I read this and tried it without it running and same issue. Did you ever find out why?

Welcome to the Forum.
Do they work with the engine running and transmission in Reverse? That is the important part.
BTW your Explorer's year and trim already show in the margin when you post.
Hopefully the member you quoted is still following as he was last seen here April 3, 2021.

Sounds like it could be short of some kind. The backup lamp is just a regular bulb (W21W) while the stop lamp is LED. Have you checked out the taillight assembly or tried to remove the backup lamp to have a look at it and its socket?
