Well I had an oil leak start on my 15 sport. Rear turbo. I thought it was either the crush ring on the oil inlet tube or the oil return tube... After taking the cat off I found that in fact the seals are shot on the rear turbo... 46k.... Really????? Pulled both the charge pipe and intake pipe off and both had oil in them I assume from internal seals going. Now the question is how the heck do I get the 3 bolts off that hold the turbo to the manifold... I can't even see them from the bottom or the top.? I believe they would come off from the bottom bc the turbo flange isn't threaded . Any advice on how to get this thing out?

They come out from the top, you have to do it blind. They are pretty accessible though, here's a back pic of an engine I have. This is out of a MKS so may be slightly different in some areas but still similar.

At 46k why wouldn't you let the dealer replace it? It should be covered by warranty.

Rebuilt title no warranty I bought it over a year ago with 38k on it. Light hit passenger front but blew the curtains. (Automatic total ) do you know of anything .Else to check for on this. It has oil on the entire compressor side. Both inlet and charge .but it's not burning oil.. I was expecting it to be the oil line on top leaking but the entire core if the turbo is dry .. and what was dripping down was coming from the intake tube on the compressor. It wasn't super tight.. I just hate to change this turbo so early.. I've never seen seals go on and blow oil on the compressor side

For some reason some have had an issue with the impeller nut coming loose and coming apart on the back turbo. You might have just caught it early, I'd check for play and if there is any out it comes.

That sucks, I would pull it and get it rebuilt or replaced with a new one. Good luck.

Seriously??? I've never heard of that ...

A local yard has one from a 17 that was blasted in the back end with 5 k miles I'm probably going to get it $300 for it. My cost new at the dealer is $ 687 so literally half the price.

Mass production turbos are cheap now and the junk yard one sounds like it should work. The F150 got the gen 2 3.5 in 17 and I think the turbos may be different, something to check into. A friend of mine has a performance turbo shop so it is less for to go rebuilt. I did a turbo on a 13 cummins last year, damn those things are heavy, removed it out the wheel well. Next time I'm taking it out the top with the intake.

Well the explorer and taurus use the same turbo 13-17 same part numbers. So it's coming out of an explorer . So I just have to go that route.. man I'm not looking forward to this at all

Did you end up swapping the rear turbo out? Can you remove the rear turbo out of the Explorer without dropping the subframe?

You can unbolt stuf from the turbo and sneak it out or remove the passenger and axle and take out as a whole unit. If you find it is stuck, you can unbolt the rear subframe bolts and get about a half inch of more wiggle room.
