Good morning,
My son has a 17 Explorer, 2 wheel drive, 2.3 turbo. The issue is, when the A/C is on the engine will overheat. i noticed the secondary fan is not working either. It went to the dealer for the recall about the relay. They said they did the relay fix according to the bulletin but the fan is still not working. I jumped power to the fan and it spun so I doubt the fan is bad. Any thoughts as to what to look at next?

Did you bring that fact about the fan not working to the dealer's attention at the time? I'd think that any competent dealer would have checked that out and advised you of the possible resolution. There is a reason there are 2 fans. Just 1 fan running is probably not moving enough air to keep the engine from overheating. Is there power going to the relay?

Peter

To my knowledge both fans work in tandem with a high and low speed component at least on mine with 3.5. Does it overheat while vehicle is moving or stationary? With A/C on the active grill shutters (if equipped 2.3) behind grill should be fully open parallel to the ground confirm that they are. Under normal operating conditions with A/C on both fans should always be running low speed. When coolant temp goes high enough the high speed fan relay should engage. Same goes for A/C high side pressure which if memory serves correct 250-270psi range high speed fan should engage.
Very odd a dealer would let that problem slide and release the vehicle as okay unless they were busy and had the lube/wash rack, cashier, service advisor or sales person on it?:)

I'm going to dig into this more tonight. i did mention that to them and there response was, "then there is something else wrong not covered under the recall". There ism power as I can hear the relay clicking. If I discount the wiring harness to the secondary fan and run my own ground and hot, the fan turns on.

I believe the service campaign has to do with high speed fan relay/wiring only. If brought to them with one fan not working correctly on both low and high speed then you should have been advised additional service procedures required at your expense if I follow along correctly.

You are correct in which I declined at the time because of expense at the moment. Strangely enough, sitting in a drive thru yesterday, I watched the temp climb with the A/C on and all of a sudden, the other fan kicked on and the heat went down. I'm puzzled lol. I'm sure it will go back to the dealer as I'm thinking it could be a PCM problem.

just clean your condenser
