2020 explorer differential

I got a reply from ford performance tech line. This is what they sent

"Good Morning,

Ford Performance is currently working on a tune for the Explorer ST and we anticipate it being available next year.

Unfortunately we do not have a gear set for the Explorer ST. I would check aftermarket to see if there is something available for your Explorer.

Thank You,"

I was hoping they had something in the works for the 8.8, and the 8.1 used in the 20+ explorers rear differential. Oh well, I'll have to contact some driveline shops and see what I can find out.

They’re probably open. If you want to know for sure, jack up the back and see if the wheels spin in opposite directions.
Or put one rear wheel on slippery, the other on dry. Goose it, if "slippery" spins, it's an open diff. Mine has traction control, but it's a peg-leg.

Thank you, Sir. Glad to be here.

Team, please let us know if you ever do the research to determine if/how and what is needed to upgrade the 2020+ XLT rear differential to the limited slip type the new Timberline has.

If the parts can be swapped out, would we need to reprogram the computer to change/eliminate the current rear axle braking action that is currently used to transfer power from the wheels that slip to the wheels that grip (assuming this is how it works) ?

Yesterday while having the oil changed, I got a look at the underside of my ST and snapped a pic of the label on the rear axle center section.

I don't know what it all means, my best guess for the bottom row, CD6R is for the CD6 platform R is rear of vehicle, 88 is for 8.8" 3C58 is for the 3.58 gears that is installed.

If anyone knows what the rest is please jump in and inform us.
tc is transmission and chasis, 051a is sterling axle plant, the rest is the serial number limw4200 is part number GC is ratio sub model. The first 6 numbers may well be the date code, we have stopped putting labels on them as of about 6 months ago. all of the information is coded into a matrix engraving.

I am a production team leader on the Diff line. I would be happy to help answer any questions. Most technical stuff is above me, but i can find out most of what anyone might want to know.

Since you work there, can the torsen diff and 3.58 gearset out of the timberline be used in the ST rear housing? Or possibly the whole rear housing?

From what I've read in the past the rear diffs are open. If you look at the attached pic, it appears Ford's traction control is amazing. I did it several times that day and laid down 2 equal length strips every time. This with our 2021 XLT with of course the 2.3L. Just do the Sammy Hagar thing, one foot on the brake and one on the gas. It does it easily and be sure to keep the windows down so you can enjoy that heavenly smell of burning rubber.... LOL!!!

So I should look for a post in the Time for Tires thread soon? :D

Peter

If so, how can I determine if I have one...or two? The doorjam sticker's Axle column contains a '3B'. Anyone know what that means?

i believe not except timberline had a torsen rear. but perhaps someone else will chime in. and if anything youd only have 1 since a front LSD is cery cery rare, i dont know of any ofered factory that way.

I'm sure someone will chime in, but my initial thought is they weren't available. Now most of that technology is done by computer and applying brakes to the slipping wheel.

Nah, I love those tires. Doing several burnouts didn't do a thing to them. At least from what I can see.... lol.... When they need to be replaced no big deal. Just part of the cost of having a heavy foot and being 55 acting like you're 15 again. Worth every penny..... :D

Your thread asking about whether the 2020 ST has a Limited Slip differential has been merged with this one. I think you'll find the answer here.
