2021 Explorer ST
Took delivery of 2021 ST in November. Currently has 3500 miles on. Have been getting a burning smell or either plastic or oil. Figured it was "break in "smell, but has gone on too long now. Also did not have a light in the glove box. Took to the dealer (still there) a weak and a half ago. The burning smell is only when it hot and idling and not all the time. If i come off of the freeway, and sit at traffic light, you can smell it. When the vehicle is moving, you do not smell it. The first afternoon at the dealer, they told me it had an oil leak and needed to send it over the heavy engine techs to get it diagnosed. Two days later said it wasnt an oil leak, but it was condensation(?). She indicated that the vehicle was built wrong, because it was not built with a light in glove box, so they were working with ford, to rectify the situation. Ended up order all parts/harness, and installed one. The fact that she indicated that is was "built wrong" leads me to wonder what else was built wrong and is something going on in/under the dash causing the smell. The other thing i noticed, was that the coolant level was only no where close to the minimum for cold level. i checked this on a morning before the vehicle was started. She said this past Friday, that all the fluid levels were full. Needless to say i will be popping the hood to see if they have added to the coolant level. I will also have a few questions regarding, how do you mistake condensation, as an oil leak?? I would like to hear if anyone else has had this, or any other questions i should be asking. thanks!

Welcome to the Forum.
If it is a burning oil smell you are getting it likely hasn't got anything to do with "in/under the dash". I lease my vehicles and have never had that so-called break-in smell from any of them. Have they checked to make sure that nothing is trapped under the vehicle that might cause a smell? Did you check the coolant level after you bought it? The "built wrong" could simply refer to the glove box feature being the wrong code when it went down the assembly line. I doubt it is really something to worry about. You do have the factory warranty that should cover anything that 'opos' up in the next few years.
