gday, ive got new 245/65/17s on the front and need to replace the back ones soon. i want to put 275/65/17s on and add spacers to the front to bring the front track out to match the rear (outside tyre to outside tyre) can anyone tell me if im going to have hassles with stress on transfere case or anything else? thanks for your time have a good one.

if your 4x4 it wont work, you will destroy the transfercase.

DON"T use 4 wheel drive unless all tires are the same size. If it's all wheel drive you need to replace them all at the same time and with the same size. You will mess something up if there not all the same size and you use 4x4.

i thought you only needed to match overall hieght and profile? so extra width is definitley a problem? dont bmw and merc 4x4 run different widths front and rear?

Width is not the problem the height of the problem is. You either need to run all 245 or all 275 on all 4 corners.

i see so even though the 245s and 275s are the same rim size, 17 and profile, 65 the 275s will be higher than the 245s overall. cheers do you have any ideas about how i can achieve what i want to do without having to buy 4 new boots?

playing with fire here but if i go for 60 profile the difference overall is 3/8th ". is there acceptable limit to allow for wear?

Nope, not close enough. If you can find 2 tire sizes that are within .1-.2 inches of each other, it would probably be okay. Not really worth it, though. Unless you are just set on having the staggered look, it's best to put the same size on all 4 corners. Doing a staggered setup (front tires narrower than the rear) looks good on sports cars and sport SUV's, but on an Explorer, there are too many potential issues. Plus, you lose the ability to rotate your tires, so you will decrease their life. I suggest sticking with the same size all around. If you want wider, go with a 255/65 or 265/65 tire, they should fit fine. Even a 275/60 should fit. All of these are 17" diameter suggestions.

cheers fellas, going to have to bite the bullet and go for 4 newies i reckon. appreciate all of the help and hopefully i'll get a few bucks back for the 245 dunlops thanks again
