First of all.... what all should i do in preparation of doing this?

Second.... what should i take with me, "just in case"?

Third... I'm carrying an LS1 motor + transmission in the hatch of my explorer. I'm going to chain it down in case of wreck or anything, I don't want it flying around. The explorer can handle the extra weight with no problems right? The handling isn't going to be awful and it isn't going to kill the performance is it?

I would be interested in this too. I am moving to Alaska in February, and we're taking the 92 Explorer up there. It's 4500 miles on way.

What does everyone think?

I'd go over all fluids, tire pressure, get them rotated as well if it hadn't been done in a while. Bring some extra oil, tranny fluid, coolant.
Are you putting the rear seat down to distribute the load? if not, I would. anyone else ?

Ahhhhh was trying to avoid id. I'll be carrying an LS1 block, + 6-speed tranny on the trip down. The trip back I'll have an LS1, automatic (which is considerably bigger), a fmic + turbo kit. Not mine, don't even ask, the friend is nuts....

But in the back seat on both trips there will be a box of extras, my subbox with a 12" sub that weighs about 50 lbs total, and enough luggage in the floor for 3-5 days. The weight should be pretty good.

Oil will be changed, transmission will be flushed, coolant will be flushed, tires will be rotated w/ fresh alignment and i'll def carry some extra fluids with me.

T-stat, fuel filter will also be changed. I just changed the transmission filter 300 miles ago and did a halfway-flush.

I drove my former explorer, OHV on a couple 1500 mile round trips last year. Never gave me a single problem.... If you take care of them, they'll take care of you.

What all would I need to buy to replace the belt, pulley and whatever. I'd like to do it all at once.

I think your good to go Willow - good luck

Your fine, i just finished a trip, 2551 miles to be exact form lima, ohio to vancouver, bc. never had a prob. If your a v8 youll spend 350 bucks on gas if prices are 2.50. i averaged 18 mpg, and when i drove the speed limit 24 mpg. Yes im 18 and HAH!! its possible to get good milage if your a teen. The fluids and all that and your fine.

I'd have a hard time seeing an LS1 and tranny fitting into the hatch of an Ex. WIth the seats down, sure, but not with them up.

I'm not paying for gas....

Aw crap.. seat's gotta go down? dammit.... i need my sub on a trip.
