Well the wife just sold her car. And she's looking at either the Edge or the Explorer. I've been campaigning pretty heavy for the Explorer, lol. So a couple of questions I have are; Pros & Cons of this engine are? Owners Likes and dislikes. I'd like to hear it all, good and bad. And the sooner the better, as she'll be ordering within the next week, so I have limited time to convince her, lol. Thanks for any info!

test drive one.

I can't think of a negative. It is smooth, quiet, powerful, etc...

Get the Explorer Sport and Call it a day. I dont see how a NA engine would benefit you over a Turbo charged engine unless you have a lead foot and are worried about speeding tickets. Towing could be an issue but in the two vehicles you are looking at a V8 isnt an option. MPG are about the same, you will need to use Premium in the ecoboost if you want max performance. That is pretty much the only flaw. Long term issues are hard to say at this point..... Turbos can be pricey to replace.

I've only put a few hundred miles on my Sport, so I haven't really had a chance to really drive the car. However, so far it has been great. Ride is quiet, smooth, and comfortable. We were also considering an Edge, but the explorer just felt more, us. It also has more space. Best advice is to drive both and see what suits your family needs best.

DO NOT test drive one !

if you do and she won't LET you get one, you'll be forever sad :)

actually the edge and sport seem to have been designed by two different car companies...

Like the Sport more every day - and so far @ 900 miles it hasn't had an issue...

this is the first tank we tried premium in to see if the performance/mpg is any different.
fyi, with regular and romping it @ 55 today it almost pulled the wheel out of my hand it accelerated so hard ! The wife looked at me like WHAT !?!?! :)

coming form a 2011 Audi Q5 - the sport is better in every way !

If you head over to the Edge forum, there is a whole thread on the comparison by many members. I had an 2011 AWD Edge Limited that was loaded except for the DVD headrests and my lease was up in March, I had it for 29,000 miles with no problems other than minor MFT issues, but nothing to shake a stick at. I now lease an Explorer Sport with every thing except the DVD headrest again, and the only thing I miss are the BAMR (big ass moon roof) and HID's from the Edge. You sit at about the same height in both vehicles, be very conscious of that when you test drive, visibility and blind spots are about the same. Interior noise at 45 MPH is about 74 decibels for both. Mileage is about 2 to 3 MPG less in the EX around town, I was getting about 17 MPG city in the Edge, I bet the highway mileage will be about the same. If you get the EX with the 2nd row buckets definitely get the rear console, in 2013 MY it was not available but 2014 MY offers the console, spend the extra $100.00. Of course the EX Sport performance is outstanding, torque steer is more prevalent in the EX, honestly I think every other trim level of the EX is just underpowered, period. The cooled seat are a must in hot climates, I'm in Florida, so I was sold. If you do go with the Edge, get the Sport as well. Hope this helps, Good Luck.

I have had my Explorer Sport for 1,193 miles and 45 days now... I cannot find a single negative thing about the 3.5 Ecoboost. And this is coming from a true car guy.

Engine is phenomenal.

Pros: Smooth, powerful, quiet...

Cons: It keeps teasing you to get on the gas so MPG suffers and you notice the torque steer.

Pro: great to drive
Con: your wife likes to drive it so you don't get much chance

I guess the real question is: If i have a choice to pick Explorer limited or Sport..which one should I pick since price diff is minor.

How is the resale of Sport?
Limited is better than Sport?

Please assist me; at the verge of buying either one of them and need assistance.

We bought my wife the 2013 Explorer Limited in November and I was driving a 2010 Lincoln MKX (the sister vehicle to the Ford Edge).

After having the Limited for 8 months, she really, really liked it. So much that I never got to drive it! So the Lincoln was traded in on the Explorer Sport.

Happy wife, happy life.

The Sport has better acceleration than the Limited once the turbos kick in. You can get the Limited with HID headlights if you order the right package, you have to install the HID's as aftermarket items on the Sport.

Test drive both and then decide.

do you want more performance or more luxury?

the sport offers significant performance gains, with even greater margins for potential performance gains once modded.

the limited offers marginal additional creature comforts like auto wipers and HIDs and power folding 3rd row seat, and automatic parallel parking, none of which were important enough to me to offset being N/A.

Sport won out for us easily. More power, still has tons of creature comforts with nav, a/c seats, keyless ignition, mft, etc. etc. etc. Added HIDs to the factory lights, wouldn't want a power fold 3rd seat anyway, and after living in Philly for 5 years, I'm good enough at parallel parking, not to mention it's a rare occurance where I live I ever need to parallel park.

All depends on what you want.

Really hard to say at this point.
The Sport is much more limited availability. MUCH more limited.
Based on that and the fact that the 3.5L Ecoboost is only in the sport, logic would indicate that the Sport will have a higher resale value.

There are a couple of options on Limited that you can't get on Sport, such as HID lamps and power folding 3rd row.

Test drive them. If possible rent a limited. Sport did it for me. Wife couldnt be happier worh the sport... Its the explorer Ford should have built all along...

I rent a lot and the Sport just is more of what i want... More grunt everywhere, better handling and better brakes.

I travel a lot and rent a lot. The Sport is just light years better--for me.

Try to live with them both, then decide...

Just to throw another option in there, the Flex is a little bigger inside, lower and can tow the same. :)
Right at the same price point as well.
:D

bump

I went to the dealer to buy an Edge Sport.
Months of research. our mind was made up before even going to the dealer.

I'm glad they had that Explorer Sport there to show me that I an not as stubborn as my wife says I am.

Loving my Explorer Sport & a the little extra cargo room has been helpful a few times already.

Traded a 2009 Hyundai Genesis sedan V8... 375HP! I haven't looked back once. This Sport is snappy! Power is instant and pulls hard. Very fun to drive. Make sure you get the 401A package.
