I am looking to getting a new headunit. Some of the models I am looking at have 2 sets of preamp outputs, so if I wanted to, I could only power a 4 channel amp. I know some amps have unamplified outputs to add more amps from that one signal. So why would I want to get a 3 preamp HU? With the 3 preamp, I'm assuming I can fade out the 4 channel amp and the sub amp. I'm also assuming I can control the amp if I get the amp and HU same company. Am I right? What are your suggestions if I am looking to build a good system?

They just put three on some, cause some people want the system as simple as possible yet with all the features. Most amps don't have the extra set of RCA outputs, so that would be one reason. Having the third set of RCAs though on the head unit is for subs, and will usually give you that extra control over that system all in one place. The drawback being that usually the control over the sub level isn't too controllable unless you're buying somethint really expensive. Most crossovers/EQs will accept 4 channels of RCA and output 6 channels, so you'd have the same thing. You'd probably get a little more frequency control, but the drawbacks would be that you'd have to shell out for the extra equipment, and now you'd be tweaking the head unit and the crossover EQ.

Getting the same brand amp and head unit doesn't mean that the head unit will control the amp. Most don't have any features like that at all. Another route would be to get an amp like an MTX or Soundstream, or even the Bazookas now, that have a small remote wire and knob that will control the amp output from the front of the car.

Just go with what you feel, and what's best for your pocket book.

Good luck,

Jon

beavis: all i know is that i bought a model with only 2 sets of preouts and wish i had got one with 3, and here's why.

i origionally only wanted an amp for my subs, but ass i get the bass hitting, its hard to hear the rest of the music. now i want a 4 channel amp + the sub amp. i could do this with a rca Y- adapter, so i would have front, rear, and a second rear that i could pass through a crossover. only problem is, i like being able to directly control the bass from my hu. (mind you it doesnt acctually effect the amp, just the signal going to the amp). i cant bring my self to not have the control, so for now i'm stuck.

assuming the price is not too drastic of a change, i'd go with the 3, even if you arent planning on needing it.

just my thoughts,
Jeff aka Lamah

Thanks Lamah. I now know it is worth spending 100-200 extra on a HU.
