1- I had my tranny rebuilt in my X June of last year. Only a couple months after buying it. I hadn't driven it for about 6 months after that. It seems as though it is still slipping. Also when I go to pull out sometimes it won't shift into gear. Both forward and reverse.

2- First time I put my X in 4wd it made a intermittent clunking noise. I use the 4wd as little as possible now for fear of what the problem is. I have had to recently use it to back into my driveway etc. When putting it in 4wd it is followed by a loud clunk again. This clunk is also felt in seats and heard blatently outside.

3- While driving up the road I can hear what sounds like a banging noise underneath. It seems to be the same noise when I apply the brakes. In a way it sounds like something in the front end is loose. My one son said he thought it was ball joints or something of that sort. My other son said he thought it seemed like it might be brakes. Who knows?

1. Your bands might need tightened.
2 and 3 might be related. You may have a bad u joint on the front axle. the 4wd actually does work though? It could be bal joints however. Does it ever cklunk over bumps? The shift motor may be due for a clean also. This problem would be better posted in the Questions for the Base explorer :)(General explorations maybe?)
