Well I am currently getting anywhere from 14mpg city and 17mpg highway as long as I keep it below 70 on the freeway if i go over the milage just take a sh** and as long as I dont mash the gas on the road as soon as I do I can practically see the needle on the gas gauge drop to empty.

OH yeah and welcome to the forum!!!!

I was getting like 15 and it dropped to about 11-12mpg after I installed the 31" Btw are you looking for a set of 31's and rims for your X?

I average 14-15 on my commute and 19-20 on our annual trips to Eastern Montana. I have 3.73 gears.

A lot depends on what gears you have. Look on the sticker on the drivers side door.

Explorer 43 Open 3200 3.08
41 Open 3200 3.27
42 Open 4.10
46 Open 3.73
45 Open 3200 3.55
D4 Limited Slip 3200 3.73
D2 Limited Slip 4.10
L73 Limited Slip 3.73

My '93 5 speed w/ 3.27's gets 16.5 city mix/ 19-22 hwy if I keep it under 70mph. The loss going from stock 235's was about 2-3mpg city and maybe 1mpg hwy.

oh yeah i forgot to mention that I have a huge rack on top of the x with hella lights in front completly cutting what ever little aero the x i mean the shoebox had. And I currently have 3:73 gears

changing from stock to 31" tires, i didnt see any significant change in MPG.

94 ex sport
mannual tranny
3.27 gears

This may be a dumb question at which point you can just ignore it but would your speedometers/tripometers be reading wrong with the increase in the tire/wheel diameters.

Yes.

by switching from the stock 235/75 to a 31, there is a good bit of difference in the revolutions per mile. You'll be going faster, and farther, than your speedometer/trip tells you. So...the point...you aren't loosing as much MPG as you think you are.

For the most part this is true. However when you are in city driving conditions, it takes more gas to get the wheels going, so therefore you will you use more gas in the city and a little less on the freeway. Also, you have to keep in mind that the rotational mass of the wheel/tire is greater.

To my understanding you could correct this with a different speedometer gear (may not be the right technical term). How much Work is involved and what is the cost to do this? I am interested in getting bigger tires when I replace my current ones, thanks.
