Just yesterday I went to a tire place and installed some used 31 X 10.5 tires on my truck. The guy put these on some steel 15X6 rims. Is it OK like that or should I go back and request wider rims? I thought 15X8 would be the best. You can't beat paying $20.00 per rim though.

Help me here,,,,

Andre,
My tire guy suggested I go to 15x8 with my tires. You get better ride and handling that way. I stayed with the 15x7's. The tires don't look as wide as they should, but they still work. Check with a reputable tire dealer in the area for their reccomendation.

Geez, I never even heard of a 15x6 before! What happened to your stock rims? I'm guessing the new rims and tires are a second set, for trail use. You'd be better off with 15x8 or 15x7, but I guess 15x6 will work. You'll probably be able to air down to single digits with that wheel/tire combo! $20 is a nice sounding price, but I bought new 15x8 steel spoke wheels for 30, and 15x7 are about twenty five.

Andre, 15x8's are the right size, 15x7's are ok. 15x6's are getting pretty narrow for a tire with a 10 inch section width but if your intent is to just use them as a second set for trail use they should work out ok. Bill is right though about the cost of rims, you can usually find steel spoke wheels in a 15x8 for around $30. That might be the way to go when you can save up a few bucks.

Getting new rims.....

I had a talk with my tire guy today. He will refund the money for the whole set-up and will give me a set of new Goodyear Wrangler RT/S's for just $300.00 complete!!! Steal!!!. I just need to get new rims so he can put these on. No big deal since I found some rims at great prices at Discount Tire. I'm going back with RT/S's because I don't do much off roading and at 31 X 10.5 these should be sufficient for what I'm doing. I will test this set-up at the Attica run. Thanks guys!!
