thanks man! I'm going to run to autozone tomorrow and pick one up. Have you noticed increased gas mileage on your ex with this? also, will the mpg and performance be increased just by the air filter itself without the holes since it is high performance?

I will be doing what I believe you said as well which is going to a junkyard and getting an extra air box in case I need to take my truck back to dealership with the powertrain warranty.

Sorry if I am annoying anyone with all these questions, like I said before I'm new to doing anything on engines.

Is it fine to just drill holes on the very bottom of the air box or do the holes in the sides improve this even more?

drill holes on the pasenger side of the box.. so it doesnt draw air from the engine comp. it gets cooler air that way. i wouldnt drill holes in the botom of the box. i did the front and left side.

take the bottom half of the box, and drill the holes on the sides of the box only... DO NOT DRILL THE TOP HALF OF THE BOX - that would be very bad

remove the silencer tube, then drill on the front, and fender side of the box like tabezic said...

kylecolb,

i get between 1-4mpg beter depending on my mood. and when u get 12-13mpg, anything will help.

i went overboard on mine using a 4/5" conduit hole saw, 9 on the front, 12 on the left and 3 on the back. thought having only 3 on the arse side might add a little forced induction haha

Put the K&N in today, already is running better, idles better too. Finally painted my driver side rear fender too where someone decided it would be fun scratch my truck with their little car, had a nice 4" long plastic deep scratch by about 2.5" wide. Had it primed and sanded down for a while.

busy day in the garage

did you do the airbox mod, or did you just put the filter in ?

Whats this Stage 2 mod you keep teasing us with Caldwell? lol

did you do the airbox mod, or did you just put the filter in ?

just the filter today, going to junk yard tomorrow to get a back up box, and then drilling holes and putting in screening tomorrow

Did this on the mustang and it feels way better.

glad to here the pony car likes the mod also

k&n has been ordered, just have to be patient now goddammit. overtook some bloke who pulled out in front of me today with my windows up,it was raining, i usually drive with them down and what a wicked sound my motor makes now. i couldnt wipe the smile off of my face all afternoon, still cant. thanks again caldwell for this awesome mod, f***** sweet:D

the K&N will make a small difference, as its a higher flowing filter...

now you should work on the " stage 2 " :D

since you love the sound of your X now, you should feel and hear the difference when you eliminate the restrictive factory tubing / intake resonators.

i'll add that to my to do list, cheers. muffler on its way, k&n on its way, spacers on its way, intake tubing next, 2.5" pipe next, tuner next, 265's next. s*** i was happy til i started talking to you blokes

help

I did the air box mod and disconnected the battery when i put everything back together it was hard to get the motor started and when it did start the wrench light came on the dash and the message center said fail safe mode i cleared it out and the motor will run but it wont rev above an idle. i cut one hole in the front of the box about 2 inch by 3 inch instead of putting a bunch of little hole would that make a difference on why it wont run right??

Disconnect the battery again. While disconnected check your MAF sensor connection. Maybe it came loose or you disconnected it and forgot to plug it back in?
Give the system ten minutes to clear then reconnect the battery. Before you start the truck, just turn the key to power up everything and allow the gauges to cycle. Then start the truck.

Good Luck.
I put holes in my box a while back and the only issues was crappy performance with all the hot air that gets sucked into it. Right now I have a big cone filter with cardboard as a box wrapped in duct tape and aluminum foil for heat resistance. Plan to cut out a box in sheet metal, when I can. Until then, the truck is running great, with nice cool temps getting into the engine (scanguage verified). The bigger filter has more surface area than the stock filter. I should have better flow.
