4.0 Exhaust Clip Thread !

So many pages on this thread. I went through a lot of the pages and I am very undecided what I should get. I have a 95 XLT 4.0 OHV and I want to get an exhaust. I don't care if it's loud, but not like straight pipe loud I guess.
I am leaning towards the Flow Master 40 series (http://flowmasterdirect.com/product.php?productid=41765&cat=0&page=2). I am also willing to purchase a cat back system there too if I can have some feedback on which would give me a good sound.

TONS of information here dude, my advice would be, check out youtube or some other online sources and find an explorer that sounds good to you, and see if it says what muffler is on it, then get an idea in your head of how you would like to do your exhaust then, start asking questions to see if anyone has better or different ideas based on personal experience

I got single in and dual out 40 series flows for my 01 sport but i dunno what model 40 series flowmasters i got. But i might get rid of them and put super 44 series and get true dual exhaust as well.

DON'T get super 44's they sound like crap after 2500 rpm!!!

I just don't know what the differences are between the mufflers. Delta/etc..

I have single in and dual out 40 series flows on my 01 sport but i might put a different exhaust i dunno yet. Everyone says they like my 40 series but I want to make it sound lil bit more louder and deeper.

I am not to sure what 40 series flows i got on my 01 sport.

I just don't know what the differences are between the mufflers. Delta/etc..

for the differences between FLOWMASTER mufflers, just hit their website's "Muffler" page( http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/mufflers.html), it has graphics illustrating the insides of each muffler, as well as a short description, and if you click on one of the mufflers you can see the different layouts that muffler has to offer (dual in/dual out, single in/dual out, etc) as well as the pipe sizes that muffler is designed to accomodate.

for any other muffler just go to the brand's website, and most of them (in my experience) will have graphics to show you what the insides of each muffler looks like. if you're interested in the acoustic properties of a muffler find some videos on youtube, or ask some of our explorer forum friends right here!

Great thank you. I checked out the site and I like the "levels" of the 40 series. I found this clip on youtube and it sounds great! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtRyUA7z5g0&feature=related
He says he has an original 40 but on the flow master site I don't see an "original" 40. Are those no longer made and if so would the Super 40 sound like that? Also, what is an off road y pipe? Would a shop be able to make this for me or do I buy it online? Sorry for so many questions, I'm really noob when it comes to exhaust :(

That is actually the starter of the thread :D but in any case, an offroad Y pipe is a pipe that comes off the headers and eliminates the cats and is illegal in almost all states (correct me if i'm wrong on both cases) and i have a super 40 on my truck with the same motor as his, with both cats in tact.

Here's my truck with that muffler with the cats http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2131951&postcount=279

but i have a Y pipe, a regular one that i put on after the cats to put a single in muffler on. that i got from summitracing.com for less then 30 dollars.

good luck
justin

"Original" 40 would just be the "Standard 40" i believe, someone correct me if i'm wrong

offroad y pipe replaces the exhaust pipes coming off the manifolds as well as the catalytic converters. it is just a Y-shaped exhaust pipe that brings the two exhaust manifolds coming off of the engine down to a single pipe with no catalytic converter. it's called "off-road" for a reason and is not street legal, and without wiring modifications will probably cause a Check Engine Light to come on. you can definitely have one made, you can probably buy one online

personally i like the Super 40 WITH cats in this video
i'll probably look at a setup similar to this except with a 2.5" tailpipe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uu15Y8fSYE4

Great information guys and I thank you. I believe I am going to go with the off road pipe and a super 40 as I live in a state which does not require any state emissions check. For the CEL I'll get some defoulers which should trick it. Is there a website that sells the Y pipe or should I just get one done at a shop? Also, 2.5 in is what everyone seems to be going as, right?
Again thanks a lot for the information guys, extremely helpful and I thank you a lot!
:)

Keep in mind that that is the OHV and not the SOHC, So for gluciano That is what your truck will sound like more then Mine or Afboy's.
Sounds a little raspy, is this what I can expect with the Y and 40?

offroad y-pipe and super 40 will be even worse, as far as "raspiness" goes... when you eliminate the cats, exhaust volume increases and becomes much more aggressive, crackly, and poppy (especially on deceleration). the cats tend to smooth/mellow out the sound a little and keep it from popping and crackling as much

the only reason that video has a little bit of popping and crackling is because the guy was just revving it, not actually driving the vehicle with a load on the engine

the offroad y pipe will make it louder and lose some of hte back presseure so it will make it backfire more on high rev's.

The 40 should make it sound exactly like the clip that aklm gave, but louder cus of the Y pipe

Best of luck,
Justin

Oh, and the y pipe will probably have to be made, or you can make one yourself in the sense taht you will cut the cats off, and put a y pipe in place where they were and run a single pipe back.

Lol, at least he know's the info's right cus both of us keep saying it. hahaha

I just wish I can hear one of these live lol. I wouldn't mind the popping sound, but I'd hate for it to sound ricer.

THey don't sound much different then they do on youtube. if it does it's because the sound quality absolutely sucks on the camera they used to record, and most of the time you can tell just by hearing the clip. You should sound relatively close to what's on the internet. but i can tell you you will sound like a rice bomb, at about 3k rpms while climbing a hill. Even then you may not have that problem because of the off road pipe, that's just how mine sounds. but other then that it sounds nice and rumbly.

That post is mine back when I had the original 40 series flowmaster on it. That sucker was LOUD- so loud that I got a ticket for it in the state of FL which is unusual. The standard 40 series is the original 40. They make cheap knock offs of this muffler such as the Thrush Welded, Pro-V, Ravin Muffler, Cherry Bomb Pro, ect. I would probably go with the Thrush Welded. its the same exact design as the standard 40.

I now have the offroad Y pipe and Super 40 muffler. You have to make the offroad Y pipe. Usually a shop will not due to legallity and there is no site selling this Y pipe.

To build one, I bought the following piping:

This kit
http://www.mandrel-bends.com/catalo...x-3-75-radius-mild-super-builder-kit-134.html

4 of these for the 02 sensors:
http://www.mandrel-bends.com/catalog/hardware-bungs-37/bungs-42/o2-bung-mild-steel-774.html

One of these
http://www.performance-curve.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=170

You also need to find 2- 2" to 2.5" adapters to connect the Y pipe to the stock manifolds. I found these on ebay. I cannot access this at work

To trick the O2 sensors, you will need one of the following
http://www.o2simulator.com/index.ph..._id=10&zenid=17ee7dea61b86994abe900481bafcba3

This will pop after you accelerate hard then let off- other than that it doesnt pop too much. And its much deeper and louder without cats then with

I only drive my truck off road of course
