1994 Ranger XLT 4x4
I have a 1994 Ranger XLT 4x4 with a bad 4.0 engine. I bought a 4.0 engine out of a 1994 Explorer and was told by more than one mechanics that the engine would just go in and plug in to my truck without any problems.

The further I get into this job (I am almost ready to pull mine out of the truck) I am noticing a few differences.... for one, I just noticed that the wiring harness is backwards, and there are a few brackets that are different too, I mean, so far it is nothing TOO big, but I am curious as to know if anyone knows if I am going to find any more surprises. For example, will the engine fit in the current mounts? Will the tranny and flywheel match up properly?

Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.

use the wire harness off your truck for the "new" motor. also, make sure the injectors are the same color (they might be a different lbs.....possibly). also, make sure the egr systems are the same. if not, swap that over as well. as for flywheel, yes its the same, and the mounts should also be the same.

Hollander Manual says they are a direct swap ? are you sure the 4.0 is out of a 94 EX ? if the 4.0 is out of a 91-92 ex, there are some problems with wiring & induction differences..
