4.0! Help! ME ASAP TURn it into a BEAST!!!!!!

I have a 1996 4.0, (yes, I know yours is different, but they might still sound similar) I don't know about your resonator problem, but if you want to know the sound of straightpipes vs flowmaster 40, here are 2 links to sound clips of my truck- the first is straightpipe, second is flowmaster 40. If you want my opinion, the 4.0 straightpipe sounds great, but you should be careful of noise laws in your state. (my "straightpipe" sound clip is with headers and cat, and thats all)

misconceived, he already said he didnt want to hear replies saying get a V8 cuz he knows it wont ever be one... give him some educated advice on the best pipe for a 4.0 6... if u dont have anything good to say then just dont say anything... btw killaexpo... i posted an exhaust thread a while back.. idk about ur resonator question but in my opinion i dont think it has one cuz the pipe seems pretty straightforward... but yea with the exhaust, i heard the best for the 4.0 was the IMCO like u were saying or Gibson.. also heard the 40series flow isnt good with the 4.0 so im with u there

From the reading the ridiculous postings this guy is looking for something that isn't going to happen. Like I said, it will always sound ricey. By the way, I have the V6 with the Gibson, and like I tell people all the time, I should have bought the V8. Wise ass comments deserve wise ass replies. How many people come on this board and ask questions without looking, or searching themselves. He gives Heavymentill attitude because he stated the obvious thing to do....LOOK. I said what needed to be said. Notice how this post sat hear until I stirred the pot?:D Despite giving you sh**, I even looked through my manuals for you and came up with squat. Regardless, mufflers are resonators themselves. There may be an external but it's not going to help anyway. As I said before the V6 will never be a "BEAST.".....Oh, and yes Killa, I am bored :smoke:

Nd i dont regret getting it... hence the fact im tryin to improve it... also ur tellin me that no v6 will ever sound good? what about the old school v6's like the grand nationals...? and a v6 will never be a beast? what about all the modded expos in this site? that a v6.. do me and everyone in this post a favor.. keep to urself...  :D :thumbdwn:

Now some people are saying put straight pipes some are saying dont... ? Which one? Who has straight pipes right now with a v6? and loves it...?

Since the resonator and muffler perform basically the same functions, I decided to write about them under one heading. Firstly, the main function of the muffler is to reduce the sound of the engine’s outcoming exhaust gases through the exhaust pipes to a minimal level. Since the muffler cannot reduce the noise of the engine by itself, some (if not most) exhaust systems also have a resonator between the catalytic converter and the muffler. Resonators are basically the second muffler, and are usually the "straight through" type.

The muffler quiets the noise of the exhaust by "muffling" the sound waves created by the opening and closing of the exhaust valves. When an exhaust valve opens, it discharges the burned gases at high pressures into the exhaust pipe, which is at low pressure. This type of action creates sound waves that travel through the flowing gas, moving much faster than the gas itself (up to 1400 mph = 625.8m/s), that the resonator and muffler must silence. It generally does this by converting the sound wave energy into heat by passing the exhaust gas and its accompanying wave pattern, through perforated tubes and tuning chambers. Passing into perforations and reflectors within the chamber forces the sound waves to dissipate their energy.:p: :p: :p: :p: :p: :p: :p: :p: :p:

i have a 4.0 with a gibson and intake and it doesnt sound ricey at all. i wouldnt run straights depending on where you live a no muffler ticket can be pricey

Great english, and are you reading the same post as me? Depressed, did i ever say I was depressed? I'm happy with my explorer, It is my daily driver, if you want a toy get a project truck. Your posts are all moronic. You complain about your exhaust not being loud on the highway, what the hell is the point of having it loud when you are driving 60+. V6 engines do sound great dipshit, just not the 4.0 that is currently being used in Explorers. Was I specific enough for you? You sir, are a meathead.:banghead:

How are the cops going to know you have no muffler? My friend has a 2004 ford ranger 4.0. nd hes running a straight pipe out right infront of the rear tires... it has the CAT still.. and its not even to loud... Not loud enuff for a cop to bother u.. I wonder if i run a stright pipe all the way to the bak will it be louder?

If you go for straight pipes, the longer the pipe is, the quieter it will be. Cops might not bother you, especilly if you are driving "responsibly". You would most likely only get pulled over if you were doing hard accelleration, or something else he might not like. Also, I have straight pipes, and I love the sound. I have never been pulled over for it, but some friends of mine have. Usually the cop will give you a five day.

Anyway, if you arn't worried about the noise, go for straight pipes. It sounds better than any muffler I have tried, (believe me, I have tried alot...)

Anyway, good luck, and let us know what you do

Jump in a little

I think most of you are probably half my age but I am going to post this anyway. I have a 94 Limited with a 4.0 OHV and while I love this old girl the only way I see to get heart stopping acceleration would be to drive it out the back of a C-5 Galaxy at 35 K feet. I also have a 78 Toyota FJ-40 that I bought new and it sufferers from the same problems...Big heavy vehicle and low horsepower.....its hard to turn a tractor into a roadster no matter how it sounds. I wish you luck in your venture and hope you can achieve something close to what you are wanting.

Dwight

One more thing about running straightpipes, if you do, leave your muffler on, but burn it out, or hollow it out, so that if you get pulled over, you can say that the muffler "failed." Yes, often they will get under your truck and look to see if the muffler is there, so DO NOT say that unless you actually have a muffler there.

I still vote straightpipe, it sounds the best, and it really rips and sounds beastly, even in the V6

so maybe what i should do is run a straight pipe out in front of the rear tires... if theres room to do so...if not maybe a staright pipe to the rear axle and then point it down....:salute:

What I have now, is my stock exhaust system, but a different (cough) muffler on (hollowed out) and jsut running out the back, like it does stock. I have been meaning to get a full aftermarket exhaust, but I havn't gotten around to it yet.

Going to play nice?

Check your local laws. In MA your exhaust needs to exit beyond the passenger compartment. Out the side was my thought but it is not worth the ticket, and rejection sticker.

Also, how my "muffler" is set up, is it is a flowmaster 40, punched out so I could put flextube through the middle, without looking different on the outside. That way, the exhaust flow just is going through a pipe with a slight bend, not a muffler. Sounds good, still.
