Just installed a rebuilt engine. It fired right up but after a while it started smoking and oil was dripping out the tailpipe.I pulled the intakes both were full of oil.I cleaned them out.Bought a new oil seperator.Put it back together and same thing.I took them off again.Changed the gaskets again cleaned them out and same thing.I have no idea where the oil is coming from.It sucked through a quart so far.Where is it coming from?Is it being drawn from the PCV?I unhooked it and same thing. Will a cracked man cause this?I am stumped.Does anyone have a clue? Thanks in advance.
This engine was ran in for 10 min before I installed it and there were no problems at all.

I am still messing with this.Is there anything that goes under the oil sep box?Or does it just go into the large hole and is sealed by the o-ring?I am going crazy.I don't want to pull the engine again because I don't think the problem is in the motor.Pulled the intakes 4 times now.I can do it in my sleep.

What year?

What year is your SOHC? What do you mean by an oil separator. I have a 2000 and as far as I know it does not have an oil separator. Was it a rebuilt engine or just another engine? Were the heads rebuilt? You said it ran for 10 minutes before you bought it. Was that on an engine stand or in another vehicle?

2000.The separator is under the lower intake and it pushes into the block. It is a black box.Hole at the top the pcv plugs into.Hole on the bottom that pushes into the block. There is a 2in hole in the block.Ford part number F77Z-6A785-AB.It was ran in at the factory that built it.To op temp.Complete long block.

Crankcase vent

Ok, that's what I thought was called the crankcase vent. To me an oil separator is what is sometimes called a pcv catch can. It helps remove the oil from the crankcase vapor before it flows into the intake to be burned.

That sounds like way too much oil to be the PCV valve. When you say "I pulled the intakes, and both were full of oil" did you mean both the upper and lower intake manifolds?

Since the engine ran fine at the rebuild shop and it is a long block I agree that it shouldn't be necessary to pull the engine. Is it possible that you have too much oil in the crankcase? I can't think of a way that a lot of oil would flow into the upper intake manifold. If the drain openings in the passenger side head is blocked then it could fill up with oil and then flow thru the hose into the main intake hose. Try pulling the hose that connects the main intake hose to the passenger side valve cover. You can run the engine with the hose disconnected and see what happens.

Ford called it the oil separator and it says separator on the box because I didn't know what it was called until the parts guy looked it up.I have it apart again and I am going to put it back again in the AM.The hose from the valve cover to the inlet had no oil in it that I could see but I will try it when I get it back together. If it is not internal it has to be drawing from a vac somewhere. The oil was right on the level now it is a quart low.I am not going to add any until I figure this out. Thanks this is a new one on me.I have been a mechanic for 30 years but don't much work on these.

Check all your vacuum lines, you may have one in the wrong spot somehow pulling crank case oil up into the intake.

Cleaned it all out.Put another new pcv.Smokes like crazy.Unhooked hose to VC no oil in it and it wasn't pulling any.Unhooked the hose from the idle nothing there. It has to be pulling from a valve guide. The engine comes out and goes back.

Leaking valve guide?

. . . It has to be pulling from a valve guide. The engine comes out and goes back.

Does a leaking valve guide(s) explain oil in the upper and lower intake manifolds? Wouldn't the oil end up in the cylinders instead of the manifolds?

I am thinking the vac from the manifold is sucking it up through.Oil is dripping from the tailpipe also.It could be a crack in the head or block.I have eliminated everything external.I can't pull the heads because it will void the warranty but I am going to check the things I can see when it is out.And I will post.

I thought I woulld update.Took the engine out and striped it down and just as I thought no 3 intake guide was loose as hell and the valve seal was waded up at the top of the valve.Vac was sucking it back and distributing it everywhere.I am sending it back. Thanks to those who helped.
