Year, Model & Trim Level
2005 Ford Explorer
The engine in my 2005 Ford Explorer 4.0 engine seized and I have to replace it. When I went to the scrap yard they told me I can only be replaced my engine the same year. Other years explorers are also 4.0 is there any reason why I could not take an earlier model a later model and replace it with mine. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

What a bunch of lieing *** holes! This one guy put a 98 4.0 in his 04! The only difference I think is they changed over to fly by wore throttle in 2003 + and if I'm not mistaken they added/removed a egr valve.

You really dont want to buy anything pre 3rd Gen

I am swapping the engine for a 2003 maybe 2004 4.0 sohc engine. Are there any modifications that will need to be done before install. what parts should i use off the old engine and which can i use on the replacement. I plan on doing the getting engine later this week and trying to see what will be my easiest options for the swap. I could not find the same year as mine .

I think the only thing that would be different is whether its a 4x4 or not

You need to keep everything down to the block, oil pan and valve covers. Everything else including sensors will have to be swapped.

If you get an 04 engine, it is a drop in affair for an 05. Both have drive by wire and share sensors, intake and all. I have a 2002 engine in my 04 and it also was not hard. Just had to swap valve covers and intake/throttle body/injectors/accessory drive brackets and a few other obvious things. Everything else hooked to the block was the same. Oil pan was the same, block mounted electronics plugged right in. If you get an earlier one or something from a ranger or mustang is when you have to take it all the way to the long block block. But it isn't hard on these and they fit fine. The difference between the 2wd and 4x4 is mostly in the presence of a balance shaft or not. It will run fine with or without it.

When we pulled up the engine diagrams of the 2005 compared 2002 thru 2004 models the internal parts look different. Is this going to be an issue. On a 2005 there are a couple extra chains on the inside for some kind of engine balancer. This was the only difference that we noticed and was why I had concerns.

My 2002 has this balancer. It isn't a year difference but most 4x4 or AWD have this balancer. Some 2wd have it as well as the 2002 engine from a 2wd Explorer I installed has it. It will make no difference if it's there or not. Some people have even cut the chain from their balancer when its tensioner failed and had no issues.
