2004 Ranger XLT 2 WD
Hello everyone,

Maybe you 4X4 guys could help me out with this one. I posted this question over on RPS 2 days ago and it nobody has responded. Maybe no one over there has a 4X4. I'm having a hard time finding a doner 2004-2006 2WD Ranger with the 4.0 and auto trans, but there's a plethora of 2004-2006 4X4 Rangers with the auto trans. Would it be possible to put the 4X4 transmission with the transfer case still attached into a 2WD Ranger with the coil spring suspension? I'm just wondering if there's cross-member on the torsion bar frame that helps hold up the transfer case.

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks,

Brian

Transfer cases do not have a supporting frame part/member. The entire weight of the transfer case rests solely on the bolts attaching it to the transmission's tailshaft housing.

Thanks for answering my question IZwack. How hard would it be to take the transfer case off and convert the the 4X4 transmission to a 2WD transmission?

Hey guys,

Can someone tell me how hard would it be to take the transfer case off and convert the the 4X4 transmission to a 2WD transmission? I know I would need to put a 2WD tailshaft housing on, but would I need to replace the output shaft?

Yes, you have to replace the output shaft. That means a complete teardown of the transmission, which is not as bad as it sounds.
