I know this is much talked about, but I am curious. I cannot find excatly what I am looking for. I don't need to rebuild yet... But I am curious if you can get equal performance out of the 5.0 or the 4.0 with some mods? I assume just modifying the 4.0 is easier than trying to fit a 5.0? What about cost, how do they compare? Since I am not ready to rebuild yet, is it better to just start making mods now (i.e.: bolt ons, chips, and such) And then these mods can be carried over to the new engine when I rebuild? What about gas mileage? Thanks
 






well this is an well spoken subject.

i have done some looking up myself:

Rebuild 240 (4.0) cost if done right about 1700 bucks
that's with core charge of 400 bucks.

then however you don't have an MODS YET

Conversion kit for 302 :

about 700 bucks,
302 from the junkyard about 500 bucks with tranny and exhaust.
master rebuild kit about 5-600 bucks

so that mounts down to about 1800 bucks, but remeber the 302 puts out more horses then the 4.0 , and there are an heck of alot more mods for the 302 then for the 240 , plus the gas mileage isn't that bad i get 15-16:1 right now...with an 240.

with an 302 the motor doesn't have to work as hard to get the X going...

btw i haven't figured any labor costs in it, since i'm all gonna do it myself, i already got the 302 wich i payed 500 buck of ron the junkyard, it's got 200K miles on it but hasn't been rebuild yet...

I think in the end it doesn't make an whol lot of difference if you are going to rebuild an 240 and add mods or you going for just an standart conversion to 302....

just remeber in the longrun an 302 is gonna cost you less (that is if you are gonna keep your X for an couple of years)
 






Sounds like you have done quite a bit of research. Just a couple of questions.

1) 302 out of what? (Explorer, Bronco, Mustang) How old?

2) How does this affect the computer system and all the electronics?

3) Does the transfer case still hook up?

4) What about the rear end?
