1 My 1997 4.0 V6 has just blown an engine. It is on 63,000 miles and has been serviced by the Ford dealer every 10,000. It appears to be the usual problem of the cam chain. Knocking noises were reported to the garage every time it was serviced, but they found nothing. I have searced this site extensively and can see that 01M01 is relevant. This number is not recognised over here as Ford appears to have its own numbering system in the UK. My dealer says that the recall information is confidential and he won't let me look at the Ford infomation. The recall notices in the US appear to have been extended to 7 years/ 100,000 miles. Over here, however, they are quoting 5 years under the UK numbering system.

Does anyone know of similar problems in Europe? There were only around 6 to 10 thousand Explorers sold in the UK as I understand, so the incidence should be much lower. Ford did replace the Fireston tyres, though not until 2001. They say that there have been no incidences of exploding tyres here.

Help! I need more information to back up my case.

Welcome to the world of owning an Explorer! I'm sorry its under such circumstances though.

If you are having grief with your local dealership don't hesitate get in touch with Ford at Dagenham by phone.

You should have been able to get your car fixed under the cam chain TSB - mine was done last year at 57000 miles and the car was over five years old at the time.

My check engine light came on and no one locally would touch it in under three weeks until I phoned Ford who got it seen to the next day. If you are stuck for advice you can ring me on 07973 293901 or 01902 881466. I may not be able to help but I'll try (I also know where you might get a 2nd hand engine if all else fails).

In the mean time

Chin up!

Welcome to the world of the dealer. As Jon says contact Ford directly. If all else fails I can get hold of secondhand engines. There is one other ONB number that springs to mind 00m12. Which is also concerned with the timing chain tensioners. Under which some have had new engines fitted by ford. All the best and don't be fobbed off by anyone.
